The Lion King franchise has been a cornerstone of Disney storytelling since the original film’s release in 1994. The timeless tale of Simba’s journey from a carefree cub to the king of Pride Rock has captivated generations. Its success inspired sequels like The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and the spin-off The Lion King 1½, as well as a live-action adaptation in 2019 that raked in over $1.6 billion at the global box office.
Disney is now expanding the franchise with Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel set to release on December 20. The film will explore the origins of Simba’s father, Mufasa, adding depth to the beloved character’s backstory.

While Disney Legend Elton John was behind the iconic music for every previous Lion King installment, Mufasa: The Lion King takes a new musical direction. This time, Disney has teamed up with Lin-Manuel Miranda, the visionary creator of Moana (2016), Encanto (2021), and Hamilton, to bring a fresh sound to the franchise.
As the film’s release draws near, Miranda has been opening up in interviews about his experience collaborating with Disney on such a cherished and legendary series.

While discussing Disney’s The Lion King franchise, Miranda expressed his deep admiration for the lesser-known spin-off, The Lion King 1½. Originally released in 2004 as a direct-to-video film, The Lion King 1½ reimagines the events of the iconic 1994 film through the eyes of Timon and Pumbaa. The comedic duo provides a hilarious behind-the-scenes perspective on Simba’s journey to reclaim Pride Rock, complete with their own misadventures and backstory.
Miranda didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for the film during a recent interview:
“I’m holding out for a live-action remake of The Lion King 1½. Because you know what, that’s the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the extended Lion King universe, and it’s low-key great!”
Comparing the film to the classic play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which explores Shakespeare’s Hamlet from the perspective of its minor characters, Miranda emphasized the unique storytelling potential of The Lion King 1½. With its humor and fresh take on familiar events, he sees the movie as a hidden treasure within Disney’s vast catalog.
Although The Lion King 1½ doesn’t have the widespread recognition of the original film, it has earned a cult following for its humor, creativity, and unique narrative structure. The movie dives into Timon’s backstory, exploring his departure from his meerkat colony and his first meeting with Pumbaa. Together, they discover their “Hakuna Matata” philosophy, which ultimately plays a pivotal role in Simba’s story.
A live-action remake could breathe new life into the spin-off, capitalizing on the success of recent Disney adaptations like The Little Mermaid (2023) and The Lion King (2019). With Miranda’s passion for the project and his expertise in crafting memorable musical moments, the film could introduce a new generation to Timon and Pumbaa’s world.
Disney has not yet announced plans to remake The Lion King 1½, but Miranda’s enthusiasm has sparked conversations among fans. His love for the quirky, self-aware spin-off could be the catalyst Disney needs to revisit this hidden gem. With the studio’s commitment to reimagining its animated classics, it’s not far-fetched to think that a live-action Lion King 1½ might be on the horizon.
