‘Star Wars’ Seemingly Confirms That Beloved Character Will Never Die

One of the defining traits of Star Wars is how rarely death is treated as final. Over the years, the franchise has repeatedly reversed what once seemed like permanent endings.

The Mandalorian (2019) revealed that Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) survived the Sarlacc pit, returning decades after Return of the Jedi (1983). The Rise of Skywalker (2019) resurrected Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) entirely, summed up by the now-infamous line “Somehow, Palpatine returned.”

Even the saga itself acknowledges this tendency, with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) telling Leia (Carrie Fisher) in The Last Jedi (2017), “No one’s ever really gone.”

In a universe that constantly jumps back and forth across its timeline, death often functions more as a pause than a conclusion.

Few characters embody that idea more than Maul. Introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Maul appeared to meet a definitive end when Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) sliced him in half and sent him falling down a reactor shaft.

For years, that was treated as the character’s final chapter. Then The Clone Wars (2008) revealed that Maul had survived, rebuilding himself with mechanical legs and re-entering the galaxy as a crime lord driven by vengeance.

His return redefined the character and cemented him as one of the franchise’s most enduring villains.

Now, Maul’s story continues with Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an upcoming animated series set after the events of The Clone Wars. The show follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire, while searching for a potential new apprentice.

Lucasfilm recently released the first official trailer, offering a darker look at Maul’s post-Clone Wars journey and his place in the early Imperial underworld.

Last year, Lucasfilm Animation Vice President Athena Portillo compared Maul’s repeated resurrections to classic horror villains who refuse to stay dead, telling IGN, “My joke for the Lucasfilm Animation team is it’s kind of like Michael Myers or like Jason Voorhees. Like you keep killing them, but they keep coming back.”

She added, “There is that threat that’s there, right? I mean, it’s Star Wars, right? So Darth Maul has passed away so many times, but he does keep coming back.”

While Maul goes on to die in Rebels (2014), there's every chance he cheated death again and will eventually return to the faraway galaxy on the other side of the original Star Wars trilogy. After all, the dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be… unnatural.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with two episodes released weekly through May 4.
