Disney and Lucasfilm still have plenty of Star Wars stories on the way, but one part of the franchise's future has become noticeably unclear. Several major movies and Disney+ series are expected to arrive through 2027, yet the official schedule largely stops there.
That unusually open calendar has sparked new questions about whether Disney is taking extra time before announcing another wave of theatrical projects. While no one outside the studio knows the answer, the timing has become difficult to ignore, given the box-office performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026).
A Box Office Result That Changed the Conversation
Few Star Wars projects generated as much excitement as The Mandalorian and Grogu. After years of success on Disney+, Din Djarin and Grogu seemed like natural choices to lead the franchise back to theaters.
The movie ultimately delivered a more modest result than many expected.
Made on a reported budget of roughly $165 million, the film earned about $345 million worldwide during its theatrical run. That total covered its reported production costs before marketing and distribution expenses, but Disney later acknowledged that the release fell short of expectations.
The film also finished as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever released in theaters. Disney has continued expressing confidence in the franchise, but the performance has naturally raised questions about how the company approaches future theatrical releases.
Plenty Is Still Coming Before 2028
Even with those questions, Star Wars fans won't run out of new content anytime soon.
The biggest theatrical release currently on the calendar is Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for May 28, 2027. Shawn Levy directs the standalone film, while Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, and Matt Smith headline the cast.
Lucasfilm also continues moving forward with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's untitled Rey movie. Daisy Ridley will return as Rey as the character begins rebuilding the Jedi Order. Although Lucasfilm has not announced an official release date, industry expectations continue pointing toward a late-2027 debut.
Streaming also remains a major part of the franchise's plans. Ahsoka Season 2 is expected to continue the story surrounding Grand Admiral Thrawn. In contrast, Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 is expected to explore further Darth Maul's criminal organization and the darker corners of the Star Wars galaxy.
The Years Beyond 2027 Remain a Mystery
After those releases, however, the official roadmap becomes much harder to read.
For years, Lucasfilm regularly revealed movies well before production began, giving fans an idea of where the franchise was headed. This time, there are no officially scheduled Star Wars releases beyond 2027.
That doesn't mean Lucasfilm has stopped developing projects. The studio has continued confirming that multiple films remain in development. Even so, the lack of firm release dates has become increasingly noticeable as 2027 approaches.
Some observers believe Disney may want to evaluate the performance of Star Wars: Starfighter before committing to additional theatrical release dates. If the film performs well, the company could move forward with more confidence. If not, Lucasfilm may continue balancing theatrical releases with its expanding Disney+ lineup.
That remains speculation, but it helps explain why the quiet schedule has become such a popular topic among Star Wars fans.
Several Projects Could Fill That Gap
Although Disney hasn't announced a post-2027 slate, several major productions remain in active development.
Dave Filoni's New Republic movie continues to stand out as one of the biggest. The crossover film is expected to unite the storylines of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka into a single theatrical event.
The Rey film could also slide into 2028 if Lucasfilm adjusts its schedule. Simon Kinberg's reported Star Wars trilogy remains in development as well, although the studio has revealed very little about its story or place within the larger saga.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited Knights of the Old Republic remake continues moving forward. A Saber Interactive executive recently suggested 2028 could be a possible target, though no official release date has been announced.
Disney's Next Move Is Still Unknown
Star Wars is far from slowing down. Movies, streaming series, and games continue filling Lucasfilm's development pipeline, giving fans several major releases to anticipate over the next two years.
Still, the space beyond 2027 stands out because Disney has shared so little about what follows. Whether the company is waiting for the right moment to unveil its next slate or taking a more measured approach after recent box office results, fans will likely keep watching for the next official announcement from a galaxy far, far away.
