Lucasfilm Turning to Sequel Trilogy for ‘Star Wars’ Future, Wants John Boyega Back

The Star Wars sequel trilogy may not be finished after all.

Lucasfilm spent years trying to move Star Wars beyond Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. Disney pivoted heavily toward Disney+, launched multiple streaming shows, and largely avoided revisiting characters introduced in the sequel era outside of occasional references.

Now, however, the studio reportedly appears to be circling back.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Lucasfilm has held talks with John Boyega about returning as Finn in a future Star Wars project.

No film or series has been officially linked to the discussions.

The report arrives during a transitional period for the franchise. The Mandalorian and Grogu reaches theaters later this month as Lucasfilm’s first theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The movie is expected to test whether the company’s Disney+ success can translate back to cinemas after years without a feature film.

But questions surrounding the project have already started surfacing.

Early tracking has pointed toward a softer opening than Disney likely hoped for, with some analysts suggesting the movie could debut below Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). Online reactions to trailers and TV spots have also been mixed, with some fans arguing the footage feels too close to a streaming production.

Rumors have additionally suggested Lucasfilm could scale back plans for the wider MandoVerse if the film struggles commercially.

Against that backdrop, the sequel trilogy suddenly looks more valuable to Disney than it did a few years ago.

Finn Could Finally Return to the Franchise

Boyega’s possible return follows months of renewed discussion around Finn online.

The character debuted in The Force Awakens as a Stormtrooper defecting from the First Order — one of the most heavily promoted storylines of Disney’s sequel trilogy. Many fans expected the character to become central to the franchise moving forward.

Instead, Finn’s role became increasingly sidelined across the trilogy.

The Last Jedi paired the character with Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) for the controversial Canto Bight storyline, while The Rise of Skywalker teased multiple unresolved revelations involving Finn, including his Force sensitivity.

The trilogy’s handling of the character remains one of the most debated aspects of Disney’s Star Wars era.

Boyega himself has repeatedly criticized Lucasfilm over the years for how Finn was treated.

ā€œWhat I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side,ā€ Boyega told British GQ in 2020. ā€œIt’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.ā€

The actor also claimed the franchise struggled to support actors of color compared to characters like Rey and Kylo Ren. He later noted that despite his frustrations, he would be open to returning as Finn in the right circumstances – namely, alongside his former co-star, Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron).

How do you thinkĀ Star Wars should bring back Finn?
