Land transformation continues accelerating around Magic Kingdom Park as Walt Disney World Resort pushes forward with multiple unprecedented expansion projects at its original theme park. Construction crews have cleared vast swaths of forested area to prepare building sites for two massive additions: the first-ever Disney Villains land and Piston Peak National Park, a Cars (2006)-themed area within Frontierland.
Disney Villains' Territory Finally Coming
D23 Expo 2024 brought official confirmation that Walt Disney Imagineering would construct the long-anticipated Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” The announcement fulfilled years of speculation and fan requests for a dedicated space celebrating antagonists from Disney's animated catalog.

Early concept artwork shared at the expo depicted dark, atmospheric environments befitting characters audiences love to hate. Walt Disney World Resort has committed to delivering new attractions, entertainment offerings, and dining experiences once the expansion is finally open to guests.
Cars Universe Arrives in Frontierland
D23 Expo 2024 also unveiled plans bringing Lightning McQueen and friends to Magic Kingdom Park through two all-new ride experiences. The attractions include a thrilling rally race designed for adrenaline seekers, as well as a family-friendly option that accommodates younger guests and those preferring gentler experiences.

Throughout the past year, Walt Disney World Resort has gradually revealed additional details about Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-inspired mini-land taking shape in Frontierland. The design philosophy emphasizes natural aesthetics that integrate with surrounding landscaping, incorporating portions of the existing Rivers of America into the new environment.
Making room for Piston Peak National Park required eliminating some of Magic Kingdom Park's most historic features. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat were permanently closed in the summer of 2025, marking the end of decades of operation.

Subsequent months witnessed a dramatic transformation as crews erected scaffolding and construction barriers throughout Frontierland and Liberty Square. Workers drained the waterway that once hosted the Liberty Belle and bulldozed significant portions of Tom Sawyer Island. Recently, local authorities granted Walt Disney Imagineering permission to establish a more permanent office complex near the construction zones at Magic Kingdom Park.
Massive Tree Removal Behind “it's a small world”
Forest clearing around Magic Kingdom Park's perimeter began before the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island attractions bid farewell to visitors. However, those initial efforts primarily served temporary construction needs, creating space for office trailers and staging areas for equipment. Those cleared zones may eventually transition into backstage support facilities for the Disney Villains land once construction is complete.
Current land clearing operations appear focused on the actual Disney Villains land footprint rather than auxiliary construction infrastructure. Aerial photography from X user @bioreconstruct reveals the dramatic scale of tree removal occurring behind “it's a small world.”

The images show hundreds, potentially thousands, of trees have vanished from the area, exposing raw earth where dense forest previously stood. The clearing extends across substantial acreage, providing visual evidence of how significantly Disney Villains land will alter the Magic Kingdom's physical boundaries.
Piston Peak Site Transformation Continues

The photographer also documented ongoing site preparation for Piston Peak National Park, which will rise from the former Rivers of America location. Similar aerial perspectives capture the dramatic transformation of land that once supported Tom Sawyer Island's caves, forts, and wilderness trails alongside the Liberty Square Riverboat's circuit.

Opening Timeline Remains Unannounced

Walt Disney World Resort has characterized the combined construction projects as the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom Park's history. However, Disney has not established or announced target opening dates for either Disney Villains land or Piston Peak National Park. Construction timelines for theme park lands typically span multiple years from initial land clearing through grand opening ceremonies. The current tree removal and site preparation stages represent early phases in lengthy development processes.
