Walt Disney World Resort has recently unveiled a major change in its theme park lineup: the transformation of the iconic Splash Mountain into the newly imagined Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. This reimagining reflects Disney’s ongoing mission to modernize its offerings, ensuring stories that resonate with diverse audiences while preserving the charm that fans have come to love.
A Nostalgic Farewell to Splash Mountain
First opening its gates in 1992 within Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, Splash Mountain quickly became a beloved staple for park guests. The attraction took inspiration from Disney’s Song of the South (1946), a film that has since been criticized for its problematic portrayal of certain cultural themes. The ride whisked guests away on a log-flume journey alongside Br’er Rabbit, set to unforgettable tunes like “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” all culminating in a 52-foot drop into the briar patch below. For decades, it stood as one of the most popular rides at the park.
However, as societal attitudes evolved, Disney decided to retire Splash Mountain in favor of a new concept. In 2020, the company made the bold announcement to re-theme the ride to align with the story of The Princess and the Frog, aiming to create a more inclusive experience. After 30 years of joyful memories, the original ride closed its doors in January 2023.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure: A New Chapter
The highly anticipated Tiana’s Bayou Adventure officially debuted at Magic Kingdom on June 28, 2024, inviting guests to join Princess Tiana and her charming friend Louis the Alligator on a lively post-movie Carnival adventure. This attraction encapsulates the rich culture, music, and vibrant spirit of New Orleans. In addition to updated animatronics and a brand-new soundtrack, the ride introduces several fresh characters, helping to usher in a new era of ride storytelling.
As the first-ever attraction dedicated to Princess Tiana, Disney aims to blend inclusivity with timeless magic. The revamped ride provides a refreshing twist to Magic Kingdom’s lineup, allowing guests to explore Tiana’s world in a more immersive way. The Disneyland Park version is set to debut shortly on November 15, 2024. To accommodate high demand, Disneyland will offer three virtual queue times daily at 7 a.m., 12 p.m., and 4 p.m., while Disney World will maintain its two daily slots at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Additionally, the attraction is available as a Tier 1 selection through Disney World’s new Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
A Seasonal Twist: Standby Line Returns
As Disney gears up for the holiday rush, a new update has been implemented for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. In a move that mirrors adjustments made for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, the ride will temporarily forgo its virtual queue and Lightning Lane systems in favor of a first-come, first-served standby line during select events.
According to WDWMagic, “similar to what guests experienced during this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, the popular attraction will skip the virtual queue and Lightning Lane reservation systems in favor of a first-come, first-served standby line for the [Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party].” During the Halloween event, average wait times hovered around 60 minutes once festivities kicked off at 7 p.m.
The change comes as Magic Kingdom hosts its Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, running from November 8 through December 20. With heavy crowds expected during Thanksgiving and Christmas, particularly as Disney’s highest-priced Lightning Lane passes are in play, the move to a standby system seemingly aims to streamline the guest experience for the hard-ticketed event.
So, whether you’re looking to dive into the bayou with Tiana or simply soak up the holiday spirit, there’s no better time to visit Walt Disney World Resort.
