For four years, former Indiana Governor Mike Pence was the Vice President of the United States. The 2024 Presidential elections are just about a year and a half away, and Pence is hot on the campaign trail. He is running against former President Donald Trump, former South Carolina Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. So far, Trump, Haley, and Christie have all criticized DeSantis for his ongoing fight with Disney. And now Pence is throwing his opinion in the ring.
Pence recently had an article published in the Libertarian magazine Reason, and he said that DeSantis was acting like the “radical left.”
“When the governor of Florida decided to launch a full-scale campaign of governmental retribution against Disney, he wasn’t taking a page out of the conservative playbook — he was following in the footsteps of the radical left. In doing so, he not only risked billions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs for the state, but even more importantly, he turned his back on the principles that make our country great.”
When asked about what Pence had to say, DeSantis’ team sent a link to an interview that DeSantis did. In the interview, DeSantis said that it was time for “the days of Republicans just deferring to large corporations” to end.
DeSantis has been in a heated battle against Disney for more than a year. The fight has cost Florida taxpayers millions of dollars and is showing no signs of slowing down. Disney is suing the controversial Florida governor for retaliation and violating its First Amendment rights. The company claims that DeSantis has targeted and passed laws against it because they spoke out against a state bill targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
DeSantis has frequently talked about the fight with Disney at his rallies, and has admitted that he did not start going after the Mouse House until they spoke out against something he supported. He has also admitted as much in his recently published book. Recently, DeSantis’ legal team has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. His team claims that it doesn’t matter what DeSantis has done against Disney because he has “legislative immunity.” A decision has yet to be made in that motion.
