Why Labor Day Weekend is So Busy

Labor Day weekend is a prime time for families and travelers to visit Walt Disney World Resort. With an extra day off work and school, many take advantage of the long weekend to enjoy a getaway. This year, the holiday coincides with Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights opening weekend, adding an extra layer of busyness to the theme park scene.

According to recent studies, Orlando’s theme parks are expected to be among the busiest in the country this weekend.

The 2023 Theme Index Report by AECOM, Themed Entertainment Association, and Storyland Studios highlighted that Magic Kingdom was the most visited theme park globally last year, drawing a staggering 17.7 million guests. Disneyland in California was a close second, but it fell short by nearly half a million visitors.

EPCOT saw significant growth in attendance, with a 19.8% increase in 2023, reaching nearly 12 million visitors. Meanwhile, Universal Orlando Resort faced a decline in attendance across its parks, with Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida seeing a 9.3% decrease.

2. Flying In? Be Prepared for Potential Delays

If you’re flying into Orlando International Airport, keep an eye on your flight status. Weather conditions can cause delays, so it’s wise to stay updated with your airline. For those staying on Disney property, the resorts offer complimentary transportation to the parks, which can help you avoid road traffic and get to the magic faster.

3. Utilize Disney’s Transportation Options

Staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel comes with the benefit of free and convenient transportation to all four theme parks. Use the Monorail, buses, boats, or the Disney Skyliner to avoid the hassle of parking and navigating through the crowds.

The Growing Costs of Disney Vacations

It’s no secret that Disney vacations come with a price tag, and some families are even going into debt to experience the magic. According to a recent report, families are spending an average of $6,500 for a week-long stay at Disney World, with some surpassing $15,000. Despite the rising costs, many families prioritize these vacations, often financing their trips through credit cards or loans.

Johnny Esfeller from Alabama shared with the New York Times how his family’s budget for their Disney World trip exceeded expectations by $2,500. Despite the financial strain, the desire to create magical memories for his children outweighed the immediate cost concerns.

A LendingTree survey revealed that nearly half of families with children under 18 have borrowed money to fund their Disney vacations. While these trips can lead to debt, many families feel that the unforgettable experiences are worth the expense. Financial advisor Rachel Cruze advises that while it’s important to enjoy these moments, it’s equally crucial to plan and save for future expenses.

Labor Day weekend at Walt Disney World Resort promises to be vibrant and bustling. By planning your travel times carefully and making use of Disney’s transportation options, you can navigate the crowds more effectively and focus on creating magical memories with your family.
