5 Things Magic Kingdom is Closing in 2025

Magic Kingdom is always evolving. With big plans on the horizon, it’s no surprise that 2025 has brought some major changes. Whether it’s permanent closures or temporary refurbishments, some classic experiences just aren’t available right now. Here’s what you’ll need to skip (or adjust your plans for) on your next visit.

1 – Big Thunder Takes a Breather

If you’re hoping for a wild ride on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you’ll need to wait. The ride has been closed since January and won’t reopen until sometime in 2026. This isn’t a small update either—Disney is giving the classic coaster an in-depth refresh with new effects and smoother track work. While the end result should be fantastic, it leaves a major hole in Frontierland this year.

2 – The Riverboat and Island Days Are Over

One of the more emotional goodbyes this year came in July when Disney officially shut down Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Belle Riverboat. These weren’t just attractions—they were a peaceful break from the busier parts of the park.

Unfortunately, they’ve been cleared out to make way for Piston Peak National Park, a brand-new Cars‑inspired land expected to open as early as 2028. It’s possible we will see some copy-cat rides from Disneyland, California – like Radiator Springs Racers and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. It’s exciting progress, but it’s still hard to see such a nostalgic corner go.

3 – See You Later, Ariel

If you’ve got little ones who love Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, keep in mind the ride will be closed from July 21 to 26 for routine maintenance. It’s a short closure, but still one worth noting if you’re visiting during that week. The attraction is expected to reopen on July 27, so this one’s just a temporary blip.

4 – Buzz Lightyear Powers Down

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is also getting a long-overdue tune-up. Starting August 4, it’ll be closed for refurbishment through at least early 2026. Expect upgraded animatronics, more accurate targets, and maybe even some queue enhancements. Buzz has always been a favorite with families, so this one will be missed—especially for guests looking to use Lightning Lane.

5 – Parade Views Blocked by Construction

Even if you’re not into the rides, Magic Kingdom has always offered a great way to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere—like catching the Festival of Fantasy Parade. But in 2025, construction walls tied to the Frontierland expansion are blocking off several of the best viewing areas. That means you’ll need to get creative or arrive even earlier to find a decent spot. The parade still runs daily, but your favorite curbside seat might be behind a wall for now.

The Park Is Changing—but It’s Not All Bad

These changes might throw a wrench in your usual park plans, but they’re part of something bigger. Disney is clearly prepping for a massive wave of updates, and while it stings to lose old favorites, it’s always exciting to see what’s next. Just be sure to check those closure calendars before you go.
