Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved attractions, is about to undergo its most significant closure yet. While the news of its temporary shutdown has been circulating for some time, a recent notice has added weight to rumors about the extensive nature of its refurbishment.
A Beloved Attraction with a Rich Legacy
While Disney has become increasingly open to adding thrill rides to its parks in recent years, there was a time when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was the wildest of the wild. Literally. For more than 40 years, this family-friendly roller coaster has taken guests on “the wildest ride in the wilderness” daily in Frontierland, solidifying its status as one of the park’s signature attractions.
But as of Monday, January 6, 2025, the ride will temporarily halt operations. Disney confirmed in 2024 that the closure is part of a lengthy refurbishment. While no specific reopening date has been provided, the ride’s webpage teases a return in 2026, promising “a little bit of new magic.”
Updates Confirmed by Recent Filings
What exactly this “new magic” entails remains a mystery, but rumors point to a complete track replacement. Should this prove accurate, it would mark a substantial update requiring a lengthy timeline.
According to WDWMagic, a newly filed Notice of Commencement for the ride lists Coastal Steel Inc. as the contractor, with the work described as “General Construction.” The notice, which carries an expiration date of March 13, 2026, hints that the refurbishment could extend into the spring of that year.
Interestingly, a previous permit for Coastal Steel had an earlier expiration date of August 8, 2025. This updated timeline suggests the project’s scope has expanded, adding to its complexity. Additionally, a permit filed by DPR Construction, a company renowned for its expertise in large-scale structural projects, shares the same March 2026 expiration date, indicating a coordinated effort.
This isn’t the first time Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undergone maintenance, though its last major refurbishment in 2012 lasted only four months. Given the extended timeline of this closure, it’s clear that Disney is undertaking the most extensive work the attraction has seen since its debut.
Routine Maintenance for Iconic Coasters
The need for such significant work is not unusual for theme park roller coasters. Tracks endure considerable wear and tear over time, and replacements are crucial for maintaining both safety and ride quality. For example, Disneyland Resort temporarily closed The Incredicoaster at Disney California Adventure Park in 2024 to replace its loop, a process also carried out in 2018.
Similarly, Universal’s Incredible Hulk Coaster at Islands of Adventure underwent a year-long closure from 2015 to 2016 to replace large portions of its track, upgrade trains, and add onboard audio and lighting effects.
Big Thunder Mountain’s closure isn’t the only significant change coming to Frontierland. Disney recently announced plans to introduce the world’s first Disney Villains land, featuring two new attractions, as well as a Cars-themed area with two additional rides. However, these updates will come at the expense of Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat, a decision that has sparked debate among Disney’s most dedicated fans.
