No Hogwarts: Fans React to Universal’s UK Theme Park Plans

After years of rumors and months of speculation, Universal has finally confirmed that it will open its first theme park in the United Kingdom. The announcement came on the heels of official government approval and was accompanied by a broad, stylized piece of concept art. But as fans squinted through the image in search of familiar attractions, a different sort of speculation began—this time about what wasn’t there.

In August 2023, Comcast quietly acquired nearly 500 acres of land in Bedfordshire, about 45 minutes north of London. One month later, the company registered multiple domain names, including UniversalStudiosGreatBritain.com, without fanfare. That low-key rollout gave way to a more public-facing phase: a consultation period held between April and May 2024.

Now, Universal Destinations & Experiences has announced that the park will (hopefully) open in 2031, with construction expected to kick off in 2026. But if the intent was to generate hype, the concept art has done something more complicated: stir controversy.

A Curious Omission Sparks Fan Backlash

Though Universal has yet to confirm which intellectual properties will anchor the park, the art appears to tease lands based on Back to the Future, Minions, Jurassic World, and various DreamWorks films. Notably absent: Harry Potter. And fans—particularly British ones—have noticed.

“Universal building a theme park without Nintendo and without Harry Potter is such an absurdly confident mood that I’m both shocked and impressed,” said one user on X, formerly known as Twitter. Another chimed in: “No Potter in the UK is absurd.”

A third pointed out the redundancy of two Potter experiences so close together: “This is gonna be a cut and paste job of Universal Studios Singapore… Orlando has too much UK tourists and the studio tour is down the road. But never mind. We shall see.”

The absence is surprising given Harry Potter’s central role in nearly every other Universal park worldwide. Guests can walk through Hogsmeade at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Beijing. Florida goes even further, with entire zones devoted to Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley, and, beginning this May, the Ministry of Magic.

Why Potter May Have Been Left Out

Universal hasn’t offered a reason for the omission. And to be clear, concept art is not gospel. Parks evolve dramatically during the development process, and the final result may look quite different. Still, one explanation stands out: Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter is located just under an hour from the Bedfordshire site.

While the legal language of the licensing deal between Warner Bros. and Universal has never been made public, the idea of Universal building a Potter-themed land within such close proximity to an existing Warner Bros. attraction raises obvious territorial questions.

There are also business considerations. The UK is one of Universal Orlando’s most profitable international markets. Duplicating key attractions in Britain could cannibalize attendance in Florida. Instead, Universal may opt to lean on other British properties with global appeal—such as Paddington, James Bond, or The Lord of the Rings.

For now, fans can only speculate. With the park not slated to open until 2031, there’s plenty of time for surprises. Universal Studios Beijing also notably changed a lot from its first concept art. Even if the Wizarding World never makes an appearance, Universal’s recent track record – with SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and the highly anticipated Epic Universe – suggests the park could still cast its own kind of spell.
