Big news is making a splash at Walt Disney World Resort, but it also serves as a timely reminder for guests planning their upcoming visits.
For the first time in years, both Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon will be open at the same time. Disney Parks Blog announced, “From May 21 through September 7, Disney World guests can enjoy the tropical shipwreck oasis of Typhoon Lagoon and the frosty fun of Blizzard Beach water park.” This is a major shift from recent years when only one water park operated at a time due to pandemic-related changes.
Interestingly, this milestone aligns with a key industry moment—May 21 is just one day before Universal Orlando Resort opens its highly anticipated third park, Universal Epic Universe. With Disney expanding its water park offerings at the same time, guests can expect more options for summer fun, but also an increased possibility of weather-related closures.
As seen in late 2024 and early 2025, Blizzard Beach faced multiple shutdowns due to colder-than-usual temperatures, and now, with both parks running, the likelihood of guest displacement due to weather conditions doubles.
Ahead of Typhoon Lagoon’s reopening on May 1, Blizzard Beach is preparing to go out in style. The icy-themed water park is marking its 30th anniversary with a limited-time celebration beginning April 1.
“Just imagine a high-energy DJ spinning some toe-tapping tunes on the deck near the Polar Pub,” Disney Parks Blog shared. “And fun interactions with Mickey and Minnie decked out in their winter attire. There’s even going to be snowman bowling and character-themed tubes for floating down Cross Country Creek.” The festivities will be short-lived, as Blizzard Beach is set to close for refurbishment at the end of the month before handing the reins back to Typhoon Lagoon.
Adding even more excitement to the summer season, Disney Water Parks’ Instagram account confirmed the return of an after-dark favorite. “Let’s glow! Disney H2O Glow After Hours is returning with fun for the whole family on select nights this summer,” the post shared.
Running from May 23 through September 13, this separately ticketed event promises exclusive nighttime access to Typhoon Lagoon, featuring complimentary treats, DJ-led dance parties, and rare character encounters. Guests can also take advantage of lower crowd levels on fan-favorite attractions like Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool and Castaway Creek.
Meanwhile, Walt Disney World is in the midst of major transformations. Magic Kingdom is preparing to introduce a land dedicated to Disney Villains and another themed to Cars, while Disney’s Hollywood Studios will soon welcome Monstropolis with the closure of Grand Avenue. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests can anticipate new experiences inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones.
Even with all these changes, Disney World continues to deliver unforgettable moments. Whether guests are taking on the thrills of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, shopping at Disney Springs, or gearing up for the grand opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom, there’s always something new to discover.
As summer approaches, it’s important to keep in mind Florida’s ever-changing weather, especially with hurricane season on the horizon. The decision to operate both water parks at once means that unexpected closures could leave more guests scrambling for alternative entertainment, potentially increasing crowds in the four theme parks. While the long-term operation of both parks remains a topic of discussion, for now, guests can dive into an exciting summer at Disney’s water parks.
