Since its debut in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean has been a beloved yet controversial attraction. The ride has undergone multiple updates over the years, including the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics in the 2000s and the 2018 replacement of the infamous bride auction scene with Captain Redd, a swashbuckling female pirate. While some fans welcomed the changes, others criticized them for erasing Disney Park history.

In 2023, a viral video reignited debate over the ride’s themes when a guest expressed discomfort with the male animatronics. “I just think this is kind of a weird ride. I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey,” she said.

Some commenters defended the ride’s legacy, while others shared similar concerns. One woman said she said “violated” by the male pirate animatronics.

“It feels like we’re the entertainment for them and I do not like it,” another Disney Parks fan agreed.

Pirates of the Caribbean Ride Breaks Down

On February 16, Disneyland Park guests riding Pirates of the Caribbean were unexpectedly stopped in their tracks. According to Reddit user u/cuber-sub30, the ride halted near the final lift hill to the unloading area.

“Been here for the last 5-10 minutes, still haven’t moved,” the guest wrote while awaiting assistance. Later reports suggest the stoppage lasted over 30 minutes, but it remains unclear whether cast members evacuated guests or restarted the attraction to complete their journey.

Disneyland Resort has not provided a reason for the unexpected ride stoppage, which isn’t unusual. Temporary breakdowns are common at Disney Parks, especially with decades-old attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Pirates of the Caribbean has reopened and continues to operate as usual.
