Prince Charming Is Getting His Own Disney Movie!

Over its 100 years, Disney has taken many classic princess fairy tales and brought them to life, and they have become the heart of the company. Fans have fallen in love with Snow White, Princess Aurora/Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Ariel, Princess Tiana, and more. But one of the most beloved and popular princesses just might be the princess who lost her glass slipper at a royal ball.

Disney first created its version of Cinderella’s story in 1950, and since, multiple films have been made revolving around the princess, her prince, and her incredible Fairy Godmother. Disney even created two sequel films — Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002) and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007). In each one of those, Cinderella is the star, and Prince Charming is her supporting character.

But now, Disney has announced that Prince Charming will be the star of his very own story.

As reported by Deadline:

After helping bring the Paddingtonfranchise and a new Willy Wonka movie to life, director Paul King has his sights set on another iconic character. Sources tell Deadline that King has come on to direct a new Prince Charmingmovie at Disney. Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing along with King.

While plot details are unknown, the Prince Charming character has many origins throughout literature but when it comes to Disney is usually linked to the character that becomes of the love interest of many of the Disney princesses. While many have linked him to classic animated pics like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, his true origin is Cinderella, where Cinderella’s actual love interest is Prince Charming.

In a grand ballroom, Prince Charming gently kisses a woman's hand. She wears a light blue gown with her hair elegantly styled up. Surrounded by other couples dancing, the scene exudes a Disney-like magical and romantic atmosphere.

Details surrounding the plot of the Prince Charming movie remain relatively vague. While there are speculations about potential story arcs, it has been clarified that the film will not solely revolve around Cinderella. This separation from the original narrative invites opportunities for creative storytelling, which may include themes of love, bravery, and self-discovery, akin to traditional fairy tale motifs.

As of now, no casting announcements have been made, leading to speculation about potential actors who could embody the iconic role. Fans and industry experts alike are eager to see who will don the crown and fulfill the role of Prince Charming.

While Disney’s new Prince Charming movie will be the first time the Prince and his story will be the star of the film, it is not the first time Disney expanded on the Prince.

For seven years, Josh Dallas played Prince Charming, AKA David Nolan, on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. While we did see Prince Charming break the sleeping curse put upon Snow White with true love’s kiss, we learned more about Charming than we ever have before. We learned his backstory and the way he met Snow White. It was an entirely different look at the Prince, and audiences loved it.
