Disney Has Indefinitely Postponed Highly Anticipated ‘Princess and the Frog’ Series

Nearly 15 years ago, Disney released the animated film The Princess and the Frog (2009). The film was a major success, as it featured Disney’s first black princess — Tiana — and brought back the feel of the classic Disney animated film.

The film — between its vibrant colors, incredible characters, and amazing music — was an immediate hit. Since its release in 2009, the movie has continued to be loved by fans, with Tiana now making appearances at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Disney has even rethemed its iconic Splash Mountain attraction into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which has just opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Then, in 2021, on Disney+ Day, the company announced that Tiana would be coming back onto our screens. The company shared that they were currently working on a series that would be exclusive to Disney+. The show would be called Tiana and would take place after the events of The Princess and the Frog.

Here’s what we learned about the show when Deadline Hollywood first shared the news:

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that Stella Meghie (The Photograph) will be director and writer of the new long-form musical series, Tiana, coming to Disney+ in 2023. In the series, Tiana sets off for a grand new adventure as the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia, but a calling to her New Orleans past isn’t far behind.

The new series was originally scheduled to be released sometime in 2023. Then, the release was then pushed back nearly a year until 2024. However, we have now learned that Disney has taken away any mention of a release time completely.

The Walt Disney Animation website now simply says that the series is “coming soon,” but gives no indication of when.

Disney has not said why they have decided to remove the release time from the website. It is possible that Disney is struggling to get the series completed, since the director is also working on another Marvel series for Disney+ called Wonder Man. We do not know when Wonder Man will be released, but the series reportedly began filming sometime in 2023.

Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Princess Tiana in the original film, was supposed to return for the series, but we do not know if that has changed.

Disney Fanatic will keep readers updated as we learn more.
