The End of Woke Disney? Laid-Off Insider Says the Company is Quietly Killing its DEI Push

For the better part of the last decade, The Walt Disney Company has been ground zero for the American culture war. Accusations of “woke” indoctrination, endless debates over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and battles with politicians have dominated the headlines. But what is actually happening inside the halls of the world’s most famous entertainment conglomerate?

Thanks to a recent round of corporate layoffs, the public is finally getting a rare, unfiltered look behind the scenes. Josh Daws, a Lead Software Engineer who spent 12.5 years working across Disney’s digital landscape—including ESPN, Disney blogs, and ShopDisney—recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to host a candid “Ask Me Anything” thread.

Daws’ revelations paint a fascinating picture of a corporate culture in flux. If you believe the loudest voices on the internet, Disney is either a progressive utopia or a malicious machine bent on destroying traditional values. According to this ex-employee, the reality is far more nuanced—and a massive “vibe shift” is actively steering the company away from its peak DEI era.

The Retreat of Disney's DEI Machine

In the wake of 2020, major corporations across the globe leaned heavily into DEI programming, and Disney was a highly visible participant. Critics quickly accused the company of sacrificing quality storytelling at the altar of corporate activism, pointing to recent box office struggles as proof that the strategy was failing.

When asked about the current state of Disney’s DEI infrastructure, Daws delivered a clear message: the pendulum is swinging back.

“They've toned it down a ton since Trump was elected. The vibe shift is real,” Daws noted. He further clarified that the heavy-handed corporate push for diversity “peaked in 2020 and has been in steady decline since then. It's much better internally now.”

For legacy fans and investors who have been begging the company to return to a politically neutral stance focused purely on entertainment, Daws’ confirmation of a “steady decline” in DEI emphasis is a massive indicator of where CEO Bob Iger and company leadership are steering the ship.

The Truth About the “Secret Gay Agenda”

One of the biggest controversies to hit Disney in recent years was the leak of the “Reimagine Tomorrow” all-hands meeting. The footage featured a Disney executive openly discussing her “not-at-all-secret gay agenda” to add more queer content to children's programming. The clip became prime ammunition for conservative critics.

When asked about the “most woke thing” he personally witnessed during his 12 years at the company, Daws confirmed the leak's authenticity, stating simply: “I was in that ‘not-at-all-secret gay agenda' all hands.”

However, Daws was quick to dismantle the idea that this mindset represents the entire The Walt Disney Company. When a user questioned why Disney employees seemingly want to force an LGBTQ agenda onto the public, the former engineer offered a reality check.

This agenda, he explained, is driven by a “very small and vocal minority of the company.” He added, “Most folks just want to make cool stuff.” Far from a company-wide conspiracy, the extreme political activism appears to be confined to specific, albeit loud, factions within the corporate structure.

Debunking the Star Wars Sabotage Myth

Daws also addressed the frustrations of the Star Wars fandom. With several divisive projects released under the Disney banner, some fans have theorized that the company is intentionally trying to destroy the franchise's legacy to push a modern agenda.

Daws rejected this outright. “Nah. No one wants to make crap,” he replied. It is a sobering reminder that bad creative decisions are usually just human error, not malicious sabotage. Furthermore, Daws noted that the workforce is more ideologically diverse than outsiders assume, mentioning that there are “more [Christians] than you might think” working for the mouse.

A Cautiously Optimistic Future

If the internal culture is vastly improving, why did Daws lose his job? The engineer attributed his layoff to broader industry trends rather than ideological purges. He cited his remote work and acknowledged that the rise of Artificial Intelligence likely played a role on a macro scale. He also noted that Disney's leadership “needs to make some big moves to instill confidence in the market.”

Despite his exit, Daws is not a bitter former employee looking to burn the castle down. When asked about his outlook on Disney’s future, he was surprisingly positive.

“Cautiously optimistic. I'm rooting for them,” he shared. “America needs a healthy Disney… Mood internally has shifted in what I consider a positive direction.”

For years, critics have wondered if Disney could ever course-correct from its highly publicized foray into corporate activism. According to this 12-year veteran, the course correction is already underway. The peak DEI era is fading, the vocal minority is being quieted, and the magic—hopefully—is making a comeback.
