SeaWorld Launches $50 Roller Coaster Upcharge, Weeks After Closing Ride Due to Low Attendance

SeaWorld Orlando's roller coaster lineup has grown significantly in recent years, and the park has just launched a new upcharge event to help thrill-seekers maximize their ride time.

After the Blackfish (2013) documentary highlighted the ethics of keeping killer whales in captivity, SeaWorld has shifted its focus from animal-based attractions to adrenaline-pumping rides. In response to waning attendance, the company introduced a range of thrill rides across its parks, with SeaWorld Orlando leading the charge, earning the title ā€œThe Coaster Capital of Orlando.ā€

Since 2022, SeaWorld Orlando has introduced three new coasters to its already impressive roster. The park kicked things off with Ice Breaker, a launch coaster that delivers an intense experience with its reverse launch up Florida's steepest beyond-vertical drop.

Then in 2023, Pipeline: The Surf Coaster made waves as the first-of-its-kind “stand-up” coaster, where riders feel like they’re riding the surf with dynamic, wave-like motion throughout the ride.

Adding to the mix is 2024's Penguin Trek, a family-friendly launch coaster that blends thrill with dark ride elements, offering an experience similar to Arctic Rescue at SeaWorld San Diego.

These coasters join longtime fan favorites like Manta, Mako, Kraken, and the hybrid water coaster Journey to Atlantis. While the latter is a classic at the Central Florida theme park, it was recently closed without warning in the middle of September due to low attendance.

SeaWorld Introduces New After-Hours Event for Coaster Fans

To make the most of its coaster-heavy lineup, SeaWorld Orlando has unveiled a new upcharge event—Coasters After Dark: Christmas Edition—giving visitors the chance to experience all seven coasters at night during the holiday season.

The event will run on select nights in November and December, offering exclusive after-hours access to the park’s biggest attractions. Guests can enjoy shorter wait times while the park is illuminated by the festive lights of SeaWorld's Christmas Celebration.

Attendees of the event, priced at $49.99 per person, can enter the park an hour before the official event start time and stay for three extra hours after regular park hours. The event includes complimentary popcorn, available at select locations, and regular food and drinks will be sold at various stands throughout the park.

The event will take place on November 8, 9, and 15 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., plus November 22, December 6,Ā and 13 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Like other after-hours events at theme parks, such as Disney’s After Hours or Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, the key draw here is the significantly reduced wait times. However, this exclusive access comes at a price, leaving fans to decide if the cost is worth the chance to ride their favorite coasters with minimal crowds.

Would you pay $50 for the chance to ride SeaWorld's coasters at night?
