The modern era of Spider-Man films has largely revolved around Tom Holland and his version of Peter Parker within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Introduced in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Holland’s web-slinger quickly became a central figure in Marvel Studios’ interconnected shared universe before leading his own trilogy: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The latter installment famously brought together three generations of the character in film, uniting audiences with earlier cinematic Spider-Men.

The Pre-Holland Spider-Man Eras
Before Holland’s arrival, the character had already been reinvented twice on the big screen. Tobey Maguire first portrayed Peter Parker in director Sam Raimi’s trilogy, beginning with Spider-Man (2002) and continuing through Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).
The franchise was later rebooted with Andrew Garfield starring in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel. Garfield and Maguire both returned alongside Holland in No Way Home, marking one of the most ambitious Multiverse crossovers in the superhero genre.

The Sony Spider-Man Universe
While those films represent the central Spider-Man storyline on screen, Sony Pictures also attempted to expand the character’s wider mythology through a separate group of projects built around supporting characters.
That effort produced titles such as Venom (2018) starring Tom Hardy, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and Venom: The Last Dance (2024). Other entries are Morbius (2022) with Jared Leto, Madame Web (2024) starring Dakota Johnson, and Kraven the Hunter (2024) featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

A New Reboot Has Been Confirmed
Now, Sony appears ready to change course. During an appearance on The Town podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that the studio plans to reboot its live-action Spider-Man–related universe with a new cast.
When asked about the future of the franchise beyond the ongoing animated Spider-Verse films, Rothman said the company intends to pursue a “fresh reboot” with “new people,” signaling that actors tied to the recent slate of spin-off films are unlikely to return.

Upcoming Spidey Projects
Despite the reset, several Spider-Man projects remain in development. Sony’s animated Spider-Verse storyline will continue with Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027, while a new television series titled Spider-Noir starring Nicolas Cage is set to stream later this year.
Meanwhile, Holland’s Spider-Man remains active within Marvel Studios’ shared universe. The actor is set to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and scheduled for theatrical release on July 31. The film reunites Holland with stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, while Sadie Sink has been cast in an undisclosed role.
