An investigation was launched immediately to determine the precise circumstances surrounding Liam Payne's death, including whether he fell accidentally, jumped, or was pushed. Initial assessments from authorities leaned toward suicide, given the eyewitness accounts of his state prior to the fall.

The preliminary autopsy revealed that Liam Payne died from “multiple traumas” that caused both internal and external hemorrhage. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina, the medical examiner classified the death as suspicious. While the investigation suggested that Payne was alone during the incident and was experiencing an outbreak related to substance abuse, the conclusion of foul play or a struggle was not definitive.

Per The Associated Press, who spoke with authorities:

The hotel manager can be heard on a 911 call obtained by the AP saying they had “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol … He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.” The manager’s voice became more anxious as the call went on, noting the room had a balcony.
