The clock is ticking on one of Branson, Missouri's most beloved roller coasters. With just over five months remaining, Silver Dollar City guests are making their pilgrimages to ride Thunderation one last time.
A 33-Year Run Comes to an End
Silver Dollar City first announced the closure of Thunderation back in February, confirming that the steel mine train roller coaster would permanently close when the park ends its 2026 season. The final day to ride will be January 2, 2027, with the attraction officially ceasing operations on January 3. Thunderation first opened in April 1993, making this the end of a 33-year chapter in Silver Dollar City's history.
The park has been treating Thunderation's final year with the reverence it deserves. A special dedication was held during the 2026 opening ceremony in March, and the roller coaster has been decorated with banners and celebratory regalia throughout the season. Commemorative merchandise marking 33 years of the attraction has also been released for guests who want to take something home from the farewell season.

Silver Dollar City has offered a playful in-universe explanation for the closure — the fictional Marvel Cave Mining Company has ordered the ride's shutdown to reclaim the land for new underground developments — while remaining characteristically tight-lipped about exactly what will replace it.
Part of a Much Bigger Vision
The Thunderation closure is the first major visible change tied to a sweeping $500 million investment plan that Silver Dollar City's parent company announced in October 2024, covering development over the next ten years. The most immediate piece of that vision is the Silver Dollar City Resort — an onsite hotel property with over 250 guest rooms, pools, a meeting space, a restaurant, and direct transportation to the theme park — set to open in late 2026.
Silver Dollar City is expected to reopen for its 2027 season sometime in March, though no exact date has been announced. It will be the first season in over three decades that guests arrive without Thunderation waiting for them.
