Over 15 months after shutting down for its biggest overhaul in history, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is showing serious signs of life in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park.
What's Been Done So Far
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed in January 2025, with Walt Disney World Resort promising “new magic” and a 2026 return. Details have trickled out gradually since then. The reimagined experience will feature an all-new Rainbow Caverns scene filled with shimmering stalagmites, phosphorescent pools, and freshly installed audio-animatronic bats.

Crews have replaced every section of the Frontierland roller coaster's steel track, refreshed set pieces throughout the ride, and outfitted the attraction with new trains that have already been painted and tested. Work in the queue area and around the entrance is still ongoing.
Walt Disney World Resort has narrowed the reopening window to early May 2026, though an exact date has not been confirmed.
Steam in the Queue

On April 8, WDWNT reported a new development at the Frontierland construction site: two large pipes extending from a queue building near the attraction were spotted actively venting steam.
The pipes themselves had also recently received a fresh coat of paint. Whether the steam effect is now running continuously ahead of the May reopening or was simply part of a one-time Imagineering test remains unclear.
Construction walls still close off much of the entrance area and will continue to do so even after Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens. Work on the neighboring Piston Peak National Park, a Cars (2006)-inspired land being built in the former footprint of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, is expected to continue well into the future.

Disney Fanatic will have updates the moment Walt Disney World Resort announces an official reopening date for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
