TMNT Reshaped Into More Kid-Friendly Franchise After Studio Drops R-Rated Project

Paramount's roadmap for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has changed, as the studio has now announced several projects that will reshape the future of the beloved franchise.

Per Variety, the studio has unveiled Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles, an animated series aimed at younger viewers that centers on the early lives of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. The new series comprised of 30 shorts will launch on YouTube later this year.

In addition to Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles, the report reveals that Paramount is developing Splinter’s Dojo, a middle-grade illustrated novel releasing from Scholastic in September.

Paramount has also partnered with Mattel for a new global toy agreement covering action figures, vehicles, playsets, and other merchandise. There are even Ninja Turtles-themed pizzerias opening in Santa Monica, Monterrey, Mexico and São Paulo, Brazil later this year.

Upcoming TMNT Movies

The Heroes in a Half Shell will also be dominating theaters over the next few years.

The 1991 sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze is preparing for a theatrical revival this March with its 35th anniversary, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 is scheduled for a late 2027 release, continuing with the world established in the 3D animated box-office hit released in 2023.

Meanwhile, IDW’s long-running comic book series continues to expand the mythology in print, and the brand’s nostalgic pull remains strong.

The Last Ronin‘s Future

It's not all good news for TMNT fans. Late last year, the planned live-action adaptation of The Last Ronin — based on the dystopian comic by Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz — was canceled. The R-rated project centering on a lone surviving Turtle in a grim future version of New York City promised a stark departure from the franchise’s traditional family tone.

But although the film has been shelved, a Last Ronin prose novel adaptation is now scheduled for release in June, and a game inspired by the comic remains in development.

A New Live-Action TMNT Reboot

Replacing The Last Ronin film is an untitled live-action/CG hybrid TMNT reboot set for November 17, 2028. Rather than leaning into the tone of The Last Ronin, the new film is expected to align more closely with the broader family strategy now guiding the brand.

What It Means for TMNT

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have reinvented themselves repeatedly since their comic-book debut in 1984 — from gritty indie satire to Saturday morning staples to blockbuster features.

Now, this latest phase appears to prioritize longevity through accessibility, expanding the brand for the next generation rather than testing the waters of mature territory.
