Freezing for the Magic: Disney Fans Risk Health to Line Up Overnight

Disney enthusiasts lining up outside Tokyo Disney Resort in the middle of the night have been warned about the risks of hypothermia as temperatures plunge.

Crowds at Disney parks are nothing new, but Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea are renowned for attracting some of the largest turnouts, particularly during major openings or limited-time events.

In 2024, the opening of Fantasy Springs at Tokyo DisneySea showcased the lengths fans are willing to go for a chance to experience something new. Entry was restricted to those with Standby Passes, Premier Access, or Fantasy Springs Passports, prompting eager visitors to start lining up at 2 a.m. to secure access.

This week, a similar scene unfolded as Tokyo Disneyland debuted Disney Pal-Palooza: Vanellope’s Sweet Pop World. According to Yahoo Japan, fans began camping outside JR Maihama Station, the nearest station to the park, as early as 1:30 a.m. Armed with sleeping bags, they braved the cold to claim prime spots for the event’s parade.

Despite their dedication, conditions were harsh. Temperatures dipped to 36 degrees Fahrenheit overnight on January 15 and 32.5 degrees Fahrenheit the evening before.

Dr. Hiromichi Ito, director of Ito Oji Kamiya Internal Medicine and Surgery Clinic, cautioned about the health risks posed by such exposure. “When your body temperature drops below 35 degrees, you run the risk of hypothermia. The more exposed parts of your body, such as your face, the more heat you lose. In the worst case scenario, if your blood pressure drops, you could go into cardiac arrest,” Ito told Yahoo Japan.

Running from January 15 to March 16, 2025, Vanellope’s Sweet Pop World transforms Tokyo Disneyland into a colorful candy-themed wonderland inspired by Wreck-It Ralph (2012). The event brings whimsical decorations, exclusive merchandise, and sugary treats to the park.

Visitors are greeted by the Mickey Mouse flowerbed and World Bazaar adorned in vibrant candy designs. The centerpiece of the event is a six-float parade featuring Vanellope, Mickey, and Minnie in sweets-inspired outfits, with show stops throughout the park. For an even more immersive experience, the Disney Ambassador Hotel offers themed guest rooms celebrating the event.
