Top 10 Things About the Tomorrowland Transit Authority

With Disney releasing “Tomorrowland” in a week has us thinking about Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World. One of our favorite attractions in Tomorrowland is the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (formerly known as the Wedway PeopleMover). Many people overlook this attraction for other Tomorrowland favorites such as Space Mountain or the Carousel of Progress, but there is much to love and enjoy with the TTA. Here are our ten favorite things!

10 – Great views – located on the “second floor” of Tomorrowland, the TTA travels around Tomorrowland on an elevated track. From your ride vehicle, you are able to see great views of the Tomorrowland Plaza, the Tomorrowland Speedway, as well as Cinderella’s Castle! You also discover new areas of the park you may not be aware of (this is how I found out about the secret path between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland).

9 – Ride previews – when you’re not enjoying the scenic views throughout Tomorrowland, you are traveling through various attractions. You get to see a small preview of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and get to look into Mickey’s Star Traders as well, but the best ride preview is when the TTA goes right through Space Mountain! If you are lucky and happen to travel through Space Mountain when it is down, you may even get to see what the classic coaster looks like with the lights on!

8 – Slow moving – not always a superlative for rides, but for the TTA is a a HUGE plus! Since the TTA takes you around the whole of Tomorrowland on winding tracks, the ride vehicle only travels at about 6 miles per hour. It takes about ten minutes to complete a full trip around Tomorrowland. I always enjoy the TTA in the middle of the afternoon when it is extremely hot or late at night when I just need a little relaxation before hitting some more attractions!

7 – Repeatability – even though the TTA experience does not change from ride to ride (unless you’re trying to catch Space Mountain with it’s lights on), I never turn down another ride. There are attractions at Walt Disney World that I have done once to say I have done it, but don’t have any draw to me to try it again.

6 – Lines – the TTA rarely as any line of note. Most of the times I go on the TTA, I am able to walk right onto a ride vehicle. It also has the added cool factor that you are taken to the second floor on a moving walkway escalator (similar to the one in the exit queue from Space Mountain). I’ve ridden the TTA at various times during the day and night and never see one time as being better or worse than another.

5 – Relaxation – not many other attractions allow you to sit down, enjoy fantastic views, and some shade for as long as the TTA. Many members of my family have been known to take a little nap when traveling around Tomorrowland – it is that tranquil.

4 – Low Crowds – since the lines are generally small and there is not much demand for seats, your party can spread out between ride vehicles. There is something very romantic about traveling around Tomorrowland at night with your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend, especially if you are able to time it so you catch some of the fireworks at night (or one of the parades).

3 – Ride it Backwards – The ride vehicles are designed to have between four and six people in vehicle, with some on one side and the rest on the other. Because of this, you are able to ride it backwards. Be careful though, people who are sensitive to motion sickness can be affected by riding backwards.

2 – Rotating Wheelhouse – I always love the rotating platform that you are on when boarding the ride vehicle. It is the same mechanism that they have at Spaceship Earth in Epcot. Be sure to watch your step!

1 – Soundtrack – the TTA does feature a soundtrack that includes some music, but mostly an automated tour of what you are seeing on your journey. It’s a small detail, but one that just enhances the ride experience a little bit more.

Have you ridden the TTA? Are you a friend or foe on this Tomorrowland attraction?
