Twist for ‘Harry Potter’ Series Revealed as Reboot Reportedly Starts Filming in 2 Days

For studios betting big on known properties, the stakes are higher than ever. As streaming platforms consolidate and viewers grow more selective, the most valuable currency is legacy — and few titles hold more weight than Harry Potter.

Over the past two years, Warner Bros. Discovery has made clear that the wizarding world is a central piece of its long-term strategy. Now, after months of speculation, that plan is quietly taking its next step: cameras are expected to roll on HBO’s Harry Potter reboot beginning July 14.

Warner Bros. Returns to Leavesden

The reboot is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same location that housed all eight original Harry Potter films. Recent photos show the construction of familiar sets, including Privet Drive and Platform 9¾, signaling a return not just in story but in physical space.

The series, first announced in April 2023, will adapt J.K. Rowling’s seven novels across a planned decade of storytelling. Each season is set to cover one book. While initially developed for HBO Max, the project has since shifted under HBO’s oversight, a move that reflects the network’s intent to treat it as a prestige drama alongside titles like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

A Faithful Retelling

The reboot has promised a more complete adaptation than the films, with greater space to explore character arcs and subplots omitted from the earlier versions. The production has also leaned into visual and musical nostalgia: the teaser trailer featured John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme,” and early reports suggest that the Great Hall set will be reused.

This blend of reverence and reinvention is at the core of the strategy. The new cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. Veteran actors joining them include John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid), and Johnny Flynn (Lucius Malfoy).

J.K. Rowling remains involved in the project, with HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirming she worked closely with the showrunners and has approved early scripts.

Rowling herself posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the scripts were “SO, SO, SO GOOD!”

While HBO has not formally confirmed the production schedule, Production Weekly has listed plans to shoot Seasons 1 and 2 back to back — a move that could help maintain the cast’s continuity, particularly given their young age.

According to Production Weekly, they’re filming season 1 and 2 of the HARRY POTTER TV series back-to-back Please note that this is not 100% confirmed and may be based on a misunderstood quote from Casey Bloys

If accurate, this approach would follow the early model used by Warner Bros. for the original film series. Philosopher’s Stone completed filming in early 2001, and Chamber of Secrets entered production just months later, keeping visual and narrative cohesion largely intact as the cast aged.

For child-led franchises, the issue of aging has long been a challenge. Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, for instance, wrapped its first season in 2023 but has yet to air Season 2. Fans of Stranger Things have also commented on the visual leap between seasons as its cast matured in real time.
