Two Months After ‘Mandalorian’ Movie, ‘Star Wars’ Confirms Season 4 Replacement

Lucasfilm has released “The Mandalorian and Grogu: Danger in the Dark,” a one-shot comic that marks the first original narrative entry in the Mandalorian comic line and serves as a direct narrative bridge between The Mandalorian Season 3 and this year's theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026).

Published July 22, 2026, by Papercutz — the children's imprint of Mad Cave Studios — in partnership with Lucasfilm Publishing, the release represents a shift in how the studio is managing continuity for the property following the apparent conclusion of the Disney+ series.

Previous Mandalorian comic releases, including Marvel Comics' adaptations of The Mandalorian Season 1 and Season 2, along with the recently completed adaptation of “The Book of Boba Fett” (2021), have functioned as direct print translations of existing streaming content rather than new material.

“Danger in the Dark” departs from that approach entirely, presenting an original story set after Season 3 that has not appeared in any previous format. The issue is written by Delilah S. Dawson, whose prior credits include “Star Wars Adventures” and “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny,” with interior art by Arianna Florean, layouts by Mario del Pennino, and cover work from Brent Schoonover, Ramon Rosanas, and additional contributing artists.

The story is set on Nevarro following the events of Season 3, in which Din Djarin and Grogu investigate a crashed pirate vessel located within the planet's volcanic lava tube system, a wreck posing a broader threat to the planet. The pair is joined during the mission by a group of Anzellan droidsmiths, with the narrative placing increased emphasis on Grogu's expanding capabilities and Din's evolving trust in his companion.

The comic's closing pages establish direct continuity with the feature film: Din receives a transmission from Colonel Ward, the character portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in The Mandalorian and Grogu, informing him that “the New Republic needs your help” and recruiting him to pursue Imperial warlords operating throughout the galaxy. This sequence connects directly to the film's opening, in which Din is shown engaging Imperial loyalists on a frozen world prior to receiving further instruction from Ward.

The comic's release follows mounting evidence that The Mandalorian has concluded as a Disney+ series rather than entering a hiatus between seasons. Promotional materials accompanying The Mandalorian and Grogu list the series' run as “2019–2023,” phrasing generally associated with a completed production rather than one awaiting renewal, and the materials contain no reference to a fourth season.

Series creator Jon Favreau has previously confirmed that Season 4 scripts were completed prior to Lucasfilm's decision to redirect the material toward a theatrical release. According to Favreau, those scripts were structured to connect directly into Ahsoka Season 2, continuing storylines involving Grand Admiral Thrawn. The resulting film was instead developed as a more self-contained theatrical narrative intended for a broader audience.

Cast members have corroborated the scope of the original Season 4 plans. Jonny Coyne, who portrays Janu Coin, has stated he anticipated a multi-episode arc under the original season structure. Hemky Madera, who portrays Empire Commander Barro, has said that material originally intended as a standalone episode was instead incorporated into the film.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to approximately $165 million worldwide, followed by a significant second-week decline, and concluded its theatrical run with approximately $340 million worldwide. While a strong result by general franchise standards, the front-loaded box office trajectory suggests the film underperformed expectations for sustained theatrical engagement relative to prior franchise entries. The film later received a limited rerelease featuring director commentary, a strategy typically employed to extend box office performance beyond an initial run.

Despite the apparent conclusion of the flagship series, Lucasfilm's broader Mandalorian-adjacent storytelling remains active. Ahsoka Season 2 is positioned to continue threads involving Thrawn and the New Republic originally slated for The Mandalorian Season 4, while Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) represents the studio's next major theatrical undertaking within the franchise.

The release of “Danger in the Dark” indicates that Lucasfilm now regards original comic content as a standard mechanism for extending franchise continuity between screen installments, rather than a supplementary or promotional format.
