Carl Weathers' passing in 2024 left a huge hole in the Star Wars galaxy, with many fans assuming his beloved Mandalorian character, Greef Karga, had quietly reached the end of his journey.
While Greef was absent from this year's theatrical release The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026), Lucasfilm has already found a way to bring the former High Magistrate of Nevarro back into canon.
When The Mandalorian & Grogu arrived in theaters, many viewers were surprised by how few familiar faces from the Disney+ series made the jump to the big screen.
Aside from Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin, Grogu, and Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (Steve Blum), the film largely focused on new additions, including Sigourney Weaver's Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White's Rotta the Hutt.
That left many longtime Mandalorian allies absent, including Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), The Armorer (Emily Swallow), and Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris).

For Greef, however, his absence was especially heartbreaking following Carl Weathers' death last year. Thankfully, though, Star Wars clearly isn't willing to say goodbye to the character.
The newly released one-shot comic Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu – Danger in the Dark serves as a canon prequel to the film while also marking Greef Karga's first Star Wars appearance since Weathers' passing.
Published by Lucasfilm Publishing alongside Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz, the comic explores the aftermath of Pirate King Gorian Shard's attack on Nevarro from The Mandalorian Season 3, directly leading into the events of the movie.
While Greef has now returned in comic-book form, the future of other absent Mandalorian characters remains uncertain. Whether Lucasfilm eventually revisits heroes such as Cara Dune (Gina Carano) in another medium remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, The Mandalorian continues to expand beyond film and television through LEGO specials, comic books, tabletop games, card games, and other publishing projects.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is now available on digital platforms, with a 4K Ultra HD release arriving on August 25.
