Universal Files New ‘Jaws’ Trademark Covering ‘Park Attraction’ 14 Years Later

Fourteen years after Jaws disappeared from Universal Studios Florida, the famous shark is suddenly back in an interesting theme park conversation.

Universal City Studios submitted a new trademark application for Jaws (1975) on September 3, 2026. While the filing covers several areas of entertainment, two phrases immediately stand out for Universal Orlando fans: “amusement park attraction” and “theme park services.”

No, Universal has not announced that Jaws is returning.

However, the filing arrives while Universal Orlando Resort has major redevelopment opportunities emerging inside two of its established parks. That makes the new paperwork particularly interesting for fans who have spent more than a decade hoping to see Amity return.

Universal’s September Filing Includes Theme Park Attractions

Universal City Studios filed the new Jaws (1975) trademark application under Serial Number #50089372.

Universal is seeking coverage across several entertainment services, meaning the application isn’t focused exclusively on theme parks.

The filing includes:

  • Amusement park attraction and theme park services
  • Organizing events in the entertainment field
  • Entertainment services involving film series and videos in drama and horror
  • Organizing entertainment contests, displays, and exhibits
  • Production and distribution of films and videos featuring entertainment, drama, and horror
  • Providing on-demand and rental films involving drama and horror

Those categories leave Universal with plenty of potential ways to use the Jaws name.

Nothing in the application says Universal intends to build an attraction. Still, including amusement park attractions naturally raises questions about whether the franchise could eventually have another physical presence inside a Universal theme park.

And Orlando currently offers some intriguing possibilities.

A Huge Islands of Adventure Opportunity Is Taking Shape

The Lost Continent is disappearing from Islands of Adventure, opening the door for Universal to transform a large portion of the park eventually.

Demolition has already started in parts of the land. Mythos remains one of its final major pieces, but its eventual closure will clear the way for further redevelopment.

Could Amity take over?

Universal could theoretically use the space to create an entire Jaws-themed coastal community, giving the franchise something much larger than a recreation of the original ride.

For now, no indication that it will happen.

Other franchises have already dominated speculation surrounding The Lost Continent. The Lord of the Rings, Pokémon, and The Legend of Zelda have all appeared in rumors or fan discussions about the area’s future.

Universal hasn’t announced what will replace the land, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

However, another location brings Jaws much closer to its former home.

Fast & Furious Leaves Universal With Another Opportunity

Fast & Furious: Supercharged has permanently closed at Universal Studios Florida, leaving a major former attraction space without an announced permanent replacement.

That puts another potential redevelopment site into the conversation, while Universal has filed new JAWS trademark paperwork covering theme park services.

Jaws originally closed in January 2012.

For years, guests traveled through Amity aboard the attraction before encountering the great white shark. Universal eventually demolished the ride and surrounding area, replacing it with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

The closure disappointed plenty of longtime Universal fans, and calls for Jaws to return have continued ever since.

A new attraction wouldn’t necessarily have to rebuild what disappeared in 2012. Universal could create an entirely different Jaws experience using modern ride technology while still bringing back familiar pieces of Amity.

Of course, other classic properties are competing for fans’ attention.

Jaws Has Plenty of Competition From Universal’s Past

Ghostbusters has become another popular topic of conversation at Universal Studios Florida, especially because the franchise already has a history in the park.

Twister (1996) has also returned to the discussion, with fans interested in seeing Universal revisit concepts connected to its earlier attractions.

The same goes for Back to the Future (1985).

Back to the Future: The Ride disappeared years ago, but it remains a favorite among longtime guests who would welcome another theme park experience based on the movie.

None of these properties has been announced as the replacement for Fast & Furious: Supercharged.

Jaws, however, now has fresh official paperwork adding another layer to the conversation.

Fourteen Years Later, Jaws Is Worth Watching Again

The new trademark application shouldn’t be mistaken for confirmation that Universal plans to resurrect Jaws.

Its scope is broad, covering films, videos, rentals, events, contests, exhibits, theme park services, and attractions. Universal could use some of those categories without ever building another ride.

But the timing gives fans a reason to pay attention.

The Lost Continent is heading toward extinction at Islands of Adventure. Fast & Furious: Supercharged has permanently closed at Universal Studios Florida. Meanwhile, Universal City Studios has filed new JAWS trademark paperwork that specifically includes amusement park attraction and theme park services.

Previous Jaws comeback discussions largely centered on rumors and fan wishes.

This filing doesn’t confirm that those wishes are coming true, but 14 years after Jaws closed, fans finally have something official to watch.
