Universal Orlando Pulling 2 Rides Offline in Early 2027

If Islands of Adventure is part of your Universal Orlando plans for early 2027, there's another reason to take a close look at the calendar before choosing your vacation dates.

Two attractions are now scheduled to temporarily disappear from the park's lineup.

The closures affect Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. One refurbishment will stretch across most of January, while the other will affect guests visiting during part of February.

For travelers who consider either attraction a must-do, these dates could make a difference.

January Brings a Lengthy Closure

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges will close first.

Universal has scheduled the attraction to remain unavailable from January 4 through February 2, 2027.

That takes the water ride out of operation for nearly a month.

The winter timing makes sense for an attraction built around getting guests wet. January can bring cooler temperatures to Central Florida, making it a logical period for routine work on water rides. The source notes that Universal typically schedules this kind of maintenance during colder periods when fewer people may want to ride.

Of course, that won't make much difference to someone who loves Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and happens to have a January vacation booked.

Those guests should prepare for the attraction to remain unavailable throughout their visit if their trip falls inside the refurbishment window.

February Brings Another Refurbishment

The second closure affects Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

Universal has scheduled the popular Islands of Adventure attraction to close February 8 and remain unavailable through February 19, 2027.

Although that's a much shorter refurbishment period, it could be more noticeable for guests who have Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey near the top of their vacation plans.

Someone arriving for a weeklong trip during that period could miss the attraction entirely.

That's why knowing these dates ahead of time can be so useful.

Plan Around the Closures Now

If your 2027 vacation dates aren't set in stone, these refurbishments could be worth considering before you book.

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges fans may want to avoid the January 4 through February 2 period. Guests who don't want to miss Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey should pay close attention to February 8 through February 19.

If changing your dates isn't an option, there's still value in knowing about the closures before you arrive. The original report points out that advance notice can help guests either reconsider their dates or simply head into the trip with realistic expectations.

Theme park refurbishments are a normal part of keeping attractions operating, but they can still be frustrating when they line up perfectly with a long-awaited vacation.

At least these two closures come with plenty of advance warning.

Both are temporary, and the current schedule doesn't have them happening simultaneously. Once Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges finishes its refurbishment in early February, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey will follow several days later.

For anyone heading to Universal Orlando in January or February 2027, adding these dates to the vacation planning checklist now could prevent an unwelcome surprise later.
