Universal Studios Hollywood has long been a favorite destination for movie buffs and thrill-seekers, offering a unique blend of immersive attractions and real studio magic. From battling dinosaurs in Jurassic World to wandering the enchanting streets of Hogsmeade, the park provides a variety of experiences for all ages.
But while the theme park itself thrives, one of its newer additions, the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, has been struggling to make its mark since opening in 2023.

The Origins of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
First launched at Universal Orlando in 2016, the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium quickly gained a reputation as a standout dining destination. Its steampunk-inspired decor, imaginative desserts, and interactive storytelling featuring Penelope Toothsome and her robot companion, Jacques, made it a fan favorite.
The Hollywood location aimed to replicate this success, opening its doors in early 2023 at Universal CityWalk. However, the restaurant has not enjoyed the same reception as its Orlando counterpart.

In the Toothsome backstory, Penelope Toothsome created Jacques, and the two set off on an adventurous journey around the world, hunting for exciting escapades and new chocolate recipes. Upon returning to London, Penelope found a note from her parents, explaining that they had left to search for her, following any trace of chocolate they could find.
To help bring her parents home, Penelope and Jacques built the steampunk-inspired Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, hoping it would serve as a beacon to guide them back.

Recent Struggles and Changes
Despite the rich backstory and thematic elements, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium in Hollywood has faced significant challenges. Most notably, Universal recently announced that Penelope and Jacques would no longer appear as walk-around characters starting December 30.
According to Universal HIGH on X (formerly Twitter),
Toothsome Chocolate Emporium in Hollywood is NOT doing well. The restaurant has only lost Universal money. Starting December 30th, the Penelope and Jacque walk-around characters will no longer make appearances in the CityWalk restaurant 😬 @UniStudios

This isn’t the only change. Earlier this year, the restaurant removed its signature chocolate counter and merchandise stands, replacing them with a bar area that has failed to attract significant interest. Many fans were disappointed by this shift, feeling that it stripped the restaurant of its unique charm.
Why the Restaurant May Be Struggling
Several factors contribute to the difficulties faced by Toothsome Chocolate Emporium in Hollywood. Firstly, the competition at Universal CityWalk is intense. Popular eateries like Voodoo Doughnut and Antojitos Cocina Mexicana offer strong alternatives, making it harder for Toothsome to stand out. Additionally, its focus on desserts and higher price points may limit its appeal to a broader audience.
The Hollywood market also presents unique challenges. Unlike Orlando, where the Toothsome concept was a novelty, the steampunk theme and elaborate desserts may feel less innovative in a region saturated with creative dining options. The removal of the interactive characters and chocolate counter has further diluted the restaurant’s distinctiveness, leaving some guests to describe it as just another themed eatery.
What Lies Ahead for Toothsome?
The future of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium in Hollywood is uncertain. While Universal has not announced any plans to close the restaurant, recent changes suggest that the company is reevaluating its approach. Fans have called for a return to the restaurant’s original concept, urging Universal to reinstate the chocolate counter and interactive elements that made the Orlando location a success.
Others suggest that Universal needs to rethink its marketing strategy to better highlight Toothsome’s unique offerings. Special events, exclusive menu items, or collaborations with local chocolatiers could help reinvigorate interest in the dining experience.
As Universal Studios Hollywood continues to expand and evolve, it remains to be seen whether Toothsome Chocolate Emporium can overcome its current challenges. For now, fans can only hope that the restaurant finds a way to recapture the magic and creativity that made its Orlando counterpart a beloved destination.
