Universal’s Deeply Disliked Ticket Bans Win Court Approval

A recent legal ruling has confirmed Universal Studios Japan’s controversial policy banning the cancellation and resale of tickets.

Theme parks, including Universal, Disney, and Six Flags, have undergone significant changes in recent years, especially since the pandemic. Disney introduced theme park reservations, which are now mostly a thing of the past, while all major parks have seen ticket prices rise. Universal Studios, while not as extreme in its price hikes as Disney, has faced scrutiny over its ticketing policies.

Ticket Policy Reviewed in Court

On December 19, the Osaka High Court upheld Universal Studios Japan’s ticketing rules, which prohibit the cancellation and resale of tickets. Universal Studios Japan, one of Japan’s top theme parks, is famous for attractions such as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, and Donkey Kong Country. Despite its popularity, the park’s ticketing practices have been challenged in court.

In a case brought by the Kansai Consumers Support Organization, a consumer advocacy group, the Osaka High Court ruled that the policy does not violate consumer rights. The organization argued that Universal’s ticketing terms breached the Consumer Contract Act by restricting guests’ ability to cancel or resell their tickets. However, Judge Yumiko Tokuoka upheld the original court’s decision, asserting that the terms were “reasonable” and intended to prevent ticket price increases.

While the court acknowledged that banning ticket resales might limit consumer choice, it concluded that the policy did not unjustifiably infringe upon consumers’ rights. Despite the ruling, the Kansai Consumers Support Organization’s legal team expressed concern, with attorney Hirokazu Murakami claiming the decision highlights how Universal’s policies restrict user freedoms.

Universal Studios Japan’s Response

Universal Studios Japan issued a statement declaring satisfaction with the court’s decision, maintaining that its policies were justified. The park has faced other criticisms, particularly regarding ongoing ride closures.

In addition to recently opening Donkey Kong Country, Universal Studios Japan has been criticized for long-term shutdowns of several attractions. Jurassic Park—The Ride has been closed for refurbishment since September 2023.

Meanwhile, Space Fantasy – The Ride has been closed since January 2023 and will reopen at the end of January 2025. Ernie’s Rubber Duckie Race, Sesame’s Big Drive, Universal Spectacle Night Parade: The Best of Hollywood, Wand Studies, and Snoopy’s Sound Stage Adventure are all also closed indefinitely, with Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic and Shrek’s 4-D Adventure set to join this list in January.

Do you believe Universal’s ticketing policy is fair or overly restrictive?
