Universal’s 25-Year-Old Ride Spirals Out of Control From Mysterious Glitch

Universal Orlando Resort has been buzzing over one particular attraction that can’t seem to stay open. For more than twenty years, it’s been one of the park’s most reliable crowd-pleasers—but now, it’s turning into a daily guessing game. One moment it’s open, the next it’s flashing “temporarily delayed.”

Guests have been sharing their frustrations online, describing how they’ve waited patiently in line only to see the status change just before boarding. While most rides at Universal experience occasional downtime, this one seems to be in a league of its own. Many fans suspect that a recent update may have caused more problems than it solved.

But to understand why this keeps happening, you first have to look at Universal’s growing problem with technology-heavy attractions across the entire resort.

Universal’s Ongoing Technical Woes

Universal’s rides are known for their creativity and innovation, but that same ambition often leads to complex maintenance issues. Attractions like Transformers: The Ride – 3D and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey rely on synchronized systems that can shut down if even one sensor misfires.

Epic Universe, the company’s brand-new park, hasn’t escaped the problem either. Both Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge have faced repeated delays despite being built with cutting-edge technology.

It’s a common theme: the more advanced the ride, the greater the chance for complications. And nowhere is that clearer than at Universal Studios Florida—the original park that still houses one of its most beloved, and most problematic, attractions.

The Ride at the Heart of the Chaos

That ride is Men in Black: Alien Attack, an interactive dark ride that opened in 2000. The attraction takes guests through a high-energy battle against alien invaders, complete with spinning vehicles and laser blasters. It’s part game, part nostalgia, and a rite of passage for many visitors.

Recently, though, the experience has become unpredictable. The attraction closes multiple times a day, sometimes for just a few minutes, and at other times for extended periods. Guests often assume it’s closed for the day, only to find it back in operation after a quick reset. Universal team members handle the interruptions quickly, but the pattern has become so common that it’s practically expected.

The Reality Behind the Delays

Why does this keep happening? The short answer: physics and people. The ride’s spinning system and timed track sequences require perfect precision. A simple lost phone or hat can bring everything to a halt. Any delay in loading or dispatching a vehicle throws off the rhythm, forcing a pause until the ride syncs again.

Then there are the human factors—motion sickness, accessibility load times, or yes, the occasional messy cleanup. It’s all part of keeping thousands of guests moving through a high-volume attraction every day.

Could a Major Makeover Be Coming?

Given the recurring issues, fans are speculating that Universal might eventually give Men in Black: Alien Attack a complete overhaul. A rumored Ghostbusters retheme has circulated for years, and it’s not hard to see why the idea has momentum. The concept—a team-based shooter fighting off paranormal creatures—would fit perfectly with the existing setup.

Whether that transformation ever happens or not, one thing is clear: the ride could benefit from some technological TLC. After 25 years of nearly nonstop operation, the classic attraction deserves a modern tune-up.

Still Part of the Universal DNA

Even with its hiccups, Men in Black: Alien Attack remains a must-do for many parkgoers. It’s nostalgic, interactive, and still delivers plenty of laughs—at least when it’s running. Guests might grumble about the delays, but few can resist hopping on once it reopens.

As Universal looks to the future, it’s hard to imagine the park without this quirky alien shootout. Whether it remains as-is or transforms into something new, it continues to represent what Universal does best: big ideas, bold risks, and a touch of chaos.
