“Very Violent” Illnesses Spreading in Florida – What Disney Visitors Need To Know

Central Florida is facing a significant surge in flu and COVID-19 cases, with ongoing outbreaks causing severe symptoms that may affect visitors to Walt Disney World Resort and other major attractions in the region.

Despite the world moving on from the most stringent restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, including mask mandates and social distancing, the risks of viral infections remain. Central Florida doctors have raised concerns over an increase in flu, COVID-19, and RSV cases, warning that the illnesses this season are particularly severe.

“Very Violent” Symptoms on the Rise

According to the CDC, 43 states – the Sunshine State included – are reporting high or very high flu activity this season.

Central Florida has been hit hard, with local physicians describing the symptoms as unusually aggressive. Dr. Michael Sparks of SparksMD Family Medicine told Fox 35, “It’s creating some very violent symptoms. We’re having a lot of patients who are struggling to kind of shake it, if you will, and even some requiring emergency visits for pneumonia or secondary bacterial infections, as well.”

Emergency department visits in Central Florida have increased by 4% this January compared to normal rates, illustrating the toll this wave of illnesses has taken on residents and tourists alike. Earlier warnings about a rise in norovirus cases—commonly referred to as the stomach bug—have added to the growing concern, especially during Florida’s current cold snap.

While Orlando has avoided snowfall, colder temperatures statewide have driven more people indoors, creating ideal conditions for the spread of contagious illnesses.

Theme Parks and Tourism Under Pressure

The high concentration of tourists in Central Florida’s theme parks doesn’t help the risk of spreading illnesses.

Crowded spaces like Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando attract visitors from around the globe, increasing the likelihood of exposure to new viruses. As one Reddit user described, the area can feel like an “international buffet of germs.”

Recent visitor complaints reflect these risks. A Disney World guest shared on Reddit in late 2024, “Been here 4 times in the past couple of years now. And every single time… basically immediately… I get the worst illness you can imagine.”

Precautions for Visitors

Doctors strongly recommend that visitors receive the flu vaccine to reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the risk of hospitalization. Those experiencing flu symptoms are urged to stay home until they are fever-free for at least 48 hours.

As Central Florida navigates this difficult flu season, visitors are reminded to take precautions, including regular handwashing and avoiding crowded areas when feeling unwell. While the magic of Disney and other attractions remains strong, nobody wants to battle through it with the flu.
