Netflix's biggest supernatural hit is running into trouble again. Filming on Season 3 of Wednesday, the Addams Family spinoff starring Jenna Ortega, has reportedly gone on hiatus while scripts get rewritten. According to The Sun, this is the second significant production setback the show has faced this year, and it comes at a time when fans are already eager for updates on where the story goes next.
For a series that's become one of Netflix's most talked about shows, delays like this tend to spark plenty of speculation. Here's what's actually been reported, along with some additional context on where Season 3 seems to be headed creatively.
Another Setback in an Already Bumpy Production
The latest hiccup comes just months after filming was forced to shut down entirely on the show's set in Co Wicklow, Ireland. A source told the outlet that the issues go beyond minor tweaks. “There have been some questions asked over the writing and the storylines involved in the latest scripts,” the source said. “It's important that these issues are ironed out before the cast carry on filming, unfortunately it's central to the show and can't be ironed out in post-production.”
That last detail matters. Rather than something that could be patched up during editing, whatever concerns showrunners have apparently run deep enough that filming simply can't continue until the material itself gets reworked.
A Show That's Faced Delays Before
This isn't the first time Wednesday has had to pause production. Season 2 filming was interrupted back in 2023 due to the Hollywood writers' strikes, a disruption that affected countless productions across the industry at the time. The show also lost actress Thora Birch during that period, who had to step away due to a family illness. Her character, Tamara Novak, ended up being written out of the series entirely as a result.
Netflix has not responded to requests for comment regarding the current delay, and there's no official confirmation yet on how long the script rewrites will take. With a release date reportedly targeted for next year, the pressure to get things moving again is likely mounting behind the scenes.
Production Was Already Well Underway Before This Pause
Prior to this latest setback, Season 3 had been actively filming near Dublin since February 2026. Jenna Ortega returns alongside longtime cast members Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, while Netflix has brought in a notable list of newcomers including Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer.
Netflix hasn't confirmed an official premiere date for Season 3, though outside reports have floated a possible late 2027 release window. Given the current production pause, that timeline could face additional pressure depending on how long the rewrite process ends up taking.
One Storyline Season 3 Seems Unlikely to Revisit

Netflix never officially cited those allegations as the reason for his departure, instead writing his absence into the show by sending Xavier off to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland.
That left Tyler as the last real thread connecting Wednesday to any kind of romantic storyline. Season 2 didn't bring the romance back, but it didn't erase the tension between the two characters entirely either. Showrunner Alfred Gough has acknowledged there's still something “unspoken” between them, noting that sparks continue to fly whenever the characters share a scene.
Why Jenna Ortega Seems to Be Steering the Show Away From Romance
None of this appears to be accidental. Ortega has been open for years about her frustration with the original love triangle, saying at one point that the storyline “made no sense” for the character. She's also spoken about pushing back on creative choices that didn't feel authentic to who Wednesday actually is, and she later praised the decision to move away from a conventional love interest as the show leaned further into horror.
Her influence carries more weight now too, since Ortega became an executive producer beginning with Season 2. That gives her a more direct hand in shaping where the story goes creatively, and based on everything said publicly so far, a full romantic reconciliation between Wednesday and Tyler currently looks far less likely than it did after Season 1.
That doesn't mean their history won't resurface at all. Gough's comments suggest the creative team still recognizes the strange chemistry between the characters. But there's a real difference between acknowledging unresolved tension and actually turning Tyler back into Wednesday's boyfriend, and everything points toward the show avoiding that second option.
