Why Hyperspace Mountain will Never Come to Disney World

Hyperspace Mountain Disney World

The Star Wars overlay of the Space Mountain, appropriately coined “Hyperspace Mountain,” was just confirmed to be returning to Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. This movie variant of the iconic Disney Parks indoor roller coaster has been making its way to the different Disneyland Parks around the world, including stops at Hong Kong Disneyland and Parc Disneyland at the Disneyland Paris Resort.

While most ride rethemes are received by grimacing would-be Guests, Hyperspace Mountain is widely celebrated as a fantastic addition to Space Mountain. But as fans get to experience it across the world, there is little to no chance that we will ever see it come to Walt Disney World Resort outside Orlando, Florida.

Those who have experienced Hyperspace Mountain know that attraction variant includes visible projections of tie fighters swarming around you with the green blaster streak flying past, giving you the feeling like you are in an actual dogfight with The Galactic Empire. The problem is that Disney World’s Space Mountain does not have the infrastructure in place to accommodate it.

Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom Park was the first version of the ride ever built by Walt Disney Imagineering. That alone holds some significance, but due to its originality, the majority of the thrill still comes from the near-pitch-black setting riders are immersed in. The coaster sits in the center of the tent-like building leaving decorative projections really the only option.

With the onset of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, and TRON: Lightcycle/Run in Tomorrowland, more and more Guests and fans are starting to warm to a complete overhaul of the landmark coaster. In fact, the Oriental Land Company is already working on it at Tokyo Disneyland. But there is still no word yet on when they can think about that. But there is no word yet if a Space Mountain refurbishment is in any of Disney Parks’ plans.

In the meantime, Hyperspace Mountain will continue to be a wonderful reason why Disney Fanatics branch out and add another Theme Park to their list.
