The curtain is about to fall on Wicked’s magical run on streaming, so fans might want to squeeze in one more watch.
Wicked, Universal Pictures’ long-anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, soared to new heights upon release. Under the direction of In the Heights helmer Jon M. Chu, the movie brought the Emerald City to life with Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Audiences followed the early days of their friendship—before it unraveled under the weight of fate and power.
The film featured a glittering ensemble: Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater as Boq. Paired with classic Stephen Schwartz tunes and an emotionally rich score by John Powell, Wicked gave longtime fans and newcomers a visually captivating and vocally dynamic experience that mirrored the grandeur of the stage.
The box office reception was nothing short of phenomenal. With global earnings exceeding $700 million, Wicked became the highest-grossing musical adaptation in history. Of that total, $460.6 million came from domestic audiences, with $240.4 million added from international markets.
Fans loved it—reflected in the film’s rare “A” CinemaScore and its impressive 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics responded similarly, delivering a strong 90% approval rating and highlighting the film’s performances and sweeping scale. Awards season also paid attention, as Wicked picked up a Golden Globe for Box Office Achievement and landed a Best Film mention from the National Board of Review.
Wicked’s Streaming Exit Looms — But Not the End of the Story
Since debuting on March 21, 2025, Wicked quickly became Peacock’s most-watched Pay 1 release. But those magical streams are coming to a close.
As The Direct noted: “Peacock has confirmed that Wicked is set to leave its streaming library on July 20, with both the standard and sing-along versions now appearing on the platform’s ‘Leaving Soon’ page.”
Wicked: For Good Set to Cast New Spells This Fall
There’s more magic to come. Wicked: For Good—previously titled Wicked: Part Two—will see Erivo and Grande reprise their roles in the next chapter of Elphaba and Glinda’s journey. The sequel arrives November 21.
Fans have long speculated how Erivo would interpret the show-stopping number “No Good Deed,” and this fall, that wait ends. With the trailer already stirring excitement, the promo cycle is in full swing. If audience energy mirrors last year’s social media campaign, For Good may even surpass the success of its predecessor.
