A Legendary Farewell: Tim Allen Reveals Plans for Retirement and His Last Role

When you think of Disney legends, Tim Allen is one name that immediately comes to mind. With a career spanning over three decades, Allen has become one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures in both film and television. Though he didn’t step into the acting spotlight until his mid-thirties, his rapid rise to fame was nothing short of remarkable.

Just three years after landing his first TV role, Allen became a household name playing Tim Taylor on the beloved sitcom Home Improvement.

But it was his connection to Disney that really cemented his place in entertainment history.

In 1994, Allen took on the role of Scott Calvin, the man who transforms into Santa Claus in the holiday classic The Santa Clause. The success of the film spawned two sequels—The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006)—as well as a Disney+ spinoff series that premiered in 2022, continuing the holiday magic for audiences of all ages.

Buzz Lightyear: A Role That Became a Legend

While The Santa Clause is one of his most iconic roles, Tim Allen is also forever linked with Buzz Lightyear, the lovable Space Ranger from Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. Allen’s voice has brought the character to life in four films, as well as numerous TV specials and video games.

Buzz Lightyear is one of those rare characters who have become a lasting part of Allen’s legacy, and he continues to return to the role, making Buzz a central figure in his career.

Shifting Gears: A New Beginning

More recently, Allen made his return to television with the ABC comedy Shifting Gears. In this new series, Allen plays Matt Parker, a widowed father who must navigate life with his estranged daughter and her two children, who return home after a troubled period.

The show has been a major hit, shattering ABC’s six-year viewership record and giving fans a fresh look at Allen’s comedic timing and heartfelt performances.

But despite the success of Shifting Gears, Allen has made it clear that retirement is on the horizon. In an interview with USA Today, the Galaxy Quest (1999) star revealed that his time in television might be nearing its end.

This probably will be the end of it,” says Allen of his TV career, though he continues to be a popular draw in both movies (“The Santa Clause 2”) and on the stand-up comedy circuit. “That sounds depressing, but I did (‘Shifting Gears') because it seemed like a good idea that would be fun. That's really it.

A Role Closer to His Heart

What makes Shifting Gears special to Allen is the personal connection he has to his character. Before agreeing to join the series, Allen insisted that he wanted to play a character that aligned more closely with his own life and beliefs. His character, Matt Parker, reflects that, and Allen has expressed how much he appreciates being able to bring a more personal touch to the role.

While television may be winding down for Allen, his journey with Disney is far from over. He is set to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in the highly anticipated Toy Story 5, which is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.
