The Virtual Queue System Has Officially Returned to Disneyland

Disneyland Resort is bringing back the Virtual Queue system for its newest attraction, “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” which will open on July 17. The show will offer guests a chance to experience a cutting-edge audio-animatronic of Walt Disney himself alongside a rich collection of artifacts from the Walt Disney Archives. It will debut at Disneyland Park on its 70th anniversary, marking a significant moment in Disney history.

In what seems like a flashback to the COVID-19 pandemic days when Virtual Queues were standard across Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, the system is once again being reintroduced to help manage guest access to this highly anticipated new show. The decision to use the Virtual Queue system comes just one week before the show’s opening.

Guests hoping to see “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” must join the Virtual Queue through the Disneyland Resort app. There will be two opportunities to join the queue each day: once at 7:00 a.m. for those with a Disneyland Park reservation and valid ticket, and once at 12:00 p.m. for those inside Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park with a valid Park Hopper ticket. These times will give guests a shot at securing a boarding group for the attraction.

Once guests are assigned to a boarding group, they will receive a notification through the Disneyland Resort app when it’s time to return to the attraction. However, getting into a boarding group doesn’t guarantee access. Technical difficulties, for instance, could lead to some later boarding groups not being called before Disneyland Park closes. Guests are allowed to join the Virtual Queue once daily, and although each group has an estimated wait time, there’s still no certainty that they will get in.

The reintroduction of the Virtual Queue system isn’t a complete surprise. Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort used it extensively during the pandemic for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Disney California Adventure Park still offers a Virtual Queue for “World of Color Happiness!”, but it’s not required to view the show.

While the mandatory Virtual Queues temporarily disappeared earlier this year when both Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure transitioned back to standby lines, the Virtual Queue will now return for Walt Disney – A Magical Life and also for the upcoming Annual Passholder previews of Test Track 3.0 at EPCOT.

Scott Gustin, a theme park journalist, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote:

NEW: A virtual queue will be in place for Walt Disney – A Magical Life when it opens July 17 at Disneyland Park. There will be 2 daily opportunities to join the VQ:
