New Actors Confirmed for ‘Frozen’s Anna and Elsa as Disney+ Project Drops

Disney’s next chapter for Frozen is taking shape—and it arrives as the company sharpens its long-term plans for theatrical releases and theme park experiences alike.

The story began in 2013, when the first Frozen arrived to record-breaking success, earning over $1.28 billion and setting a standard for what Disney Animation could achieve. Frozen II followed in 2019 and hit $1.45 billion, proving the story of Elsa and Anna had become one of Disney’s most valuable assets.

“Let It Go,” performed by Idina Menzel, became a worldwide cultural moment—and an Oscar winner for Best Original Song. The franchise’s shift toward themes like emotional growth, identity, and sisterhood made it stand out within Disney’s legacy of animated features.

When Bob Iger returned as CEO in November 2022, replacing Bob Chapek, he confirmed that work was underway on sequels to Toy Story, Zootopia, and Frozen. The first out of the gate will be Zootopia 2, arriving November 28, 2025.

At the most recent D23 Expo, fans finally learned more about how Frozen will continue. Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee previewed concept art for Frozen III, featuring Elsa and Anna on a mysterious new adventure across unfamiliar terrain.

“Filmmaker Jennifer Lee said, ‘There were a lot of questions coming out of Frozen 2…it will take two films to answer them,'” Deadline reported. “She did this without saying on the nose that there will be a Frozen 4. Nor was a logo for Frozen 4 flashed up on the screen.”

Speculation around a fourth movie escalated last year, during the opening of the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland in November 2023. Bob Iger hinted that plans might already extend beyond the third installment.

Frozen 3 is in the works,” Iger said in an interview with Good Morning America (via Deadline). “And there might be a Frozen 4 in the works, too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now.”

While many expected more details at D23, no mention of Frozen 4 was made—raising questions about whether the narrative could ultimately be reduced to a single film. A release date, however, was confirmed.

“She did say Frozen III, or Frozen 3, would hit screens in 2027 (Disney has Nov.24, 2027, on hold for the animated movie –that’s the traditional Thanksgiving spot for Frozen),” wrote Deadline.

IGN had previously outlined an earlier target: “During Disney's Q1 2024 earnings call in February, CEO Bob Iger revealed that Frozen 3 was given a 2026 release window alongside Toy Story 5, the latter of which was later assigned a June 19, 2026 release date. Considering that the first two Frozen films were released around Thanksgiving in November, chances are Frozen 3 will release on November 25, 2026.”

The project has since shifted to November 2027.

A New Frozen Arrives–With a New Ensemble

In the meantime, Frozen fans did receive a surprise. On October 24, Disney and LEGO launched LEGO Disney Frozen: Operation Puffins on Disney+, bringing Arendelle back to the screen with an entirely different cast.

As Disney Parks Blog detailed: “After the events of Disney’s Frozen, Anna and Elsa want to start fresh in Arendelle and make the castle feel a bit more comfortable,” it wrote on the new Frozen story. “While they struggle to break free of the bounds of tradition, the Duke of Weselton has other plans for their beloved home alongside a flock of menacing puffins.”

In this version, none of the original principal cast returned. Abby Trott voices Anna, Danielle Bisutti portrays Elsa, Jake Green takes over as Olaf, and Matt Lowe replaces Jonathan Groff as Kristoff. Returning actors include Alan Tudyk as the Duke of Weselton, Stephen J. Anderson as Kai, and Paul Briggs as Marshmallow.

Production Status of Frozen 3

Although the release date is locked in, Frozen III remains early in development. Josh Gad shared a disappointing update with Collider.

“We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it's going to be worth the wait. It's pretty extraordinary what they're doing. Pretty extraordinary,” Gad said.

He added that the creative team has stayed committed to meaningful storytelling: “For me, my whole thing was don't do a sequel unless there's a reason to do a sequel. If you have a story worth telling, then call us up and let's do it. To Jennifer Lee's credit, she really took that note and gave herself that note and has created something that's going to be worth the wait.”

Gad also supported what Iger and Lee previously hinted at.

“I think the plan, what they've announced, is that there is a Frozen 3 and 4 in the works,” the actor added. “The story that I've been kind of previewed is the grandest story we've ever done, so I anticipate it's going to be a little too much for one movie.”

From merchandise and podcasts to gaming and Broadway, Frozen has built a cross-platform presence that few modern franchises can match. Theme park attractions like Frozen Ever After at Walt Disney World, Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey at Tokyo DisneySea, and Hong Kong Disneyland’s World of Frozen have extended the world of Arendelle far beyond the movie theater.

More than a fairytale, Frozen became a new blueprint for Disney’s approach to character and theme. Elsa and Anna represent stories grounded in inner life rather than romance, leading many fans to interpret Elsa’s arc through discussions of queer identity—an interpretation Disney has neither directly confirmed nor fully dismissed.

The franchise remains a vital pillar for Disney—and its influence continues to shape the company’s broader storytelling strategy.

Even though Inside Out 2 (2024) surpassed Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time—before being overtaken itself—the impact of Frozen still echoes. Arendelle is evolving yet again, and fans are watching closely.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
