Frozen fans may want to brace for a longer wait before the return of Elsa, Anna, and Olaf.

Since 2013, Frozen has stood as one of Disney’s most powerful franchises. The original feature not only raked in $1.28 billion globally but also redefined what audiences expected from a Disney princess movie. Its sequel, Frozen II, went on to surpass that milestone with $1.45 billion, cementing the property as a global phenomenon.
Of course, the films also left a mark in pop culture. Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” became an anthem that traveled far beyond the screen, earning an Academy Award for Best Original Song and inspiring countless singalongs worldwide. Elsa and Anna’s story diverged from traditional princess tropes, highlighting sisterhood, independence, and identity over romance.

When Bob Iger made his return to the CEO chair in November 2022, he revealed new chapters were on the way for Frozen, Toy Story, and Zootopia. Of those, Zootopia 2 will arrive first on November 28, 2025.
At D23 Expo 2024, Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, provided fans with their first sneak peek at Frozen III. The concept art showed Anna and Elsa journeying on animal companions toward a luminous new land.
“Filmmaker Jennifer Lee said, ‘There were a lot of questions coming out of Frozen 2…it will take two films to answer them,'” Deadline reported. “She did this without saying on the nose that there will be a Frozen 4. Nor was a logo for Frozen 4 flashed up on the screen.”

The suggestion of a fourth entry has already been floated. Iger himself teased the idea in November 2023 during the grand opening of the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland.
“Frozen 3 is in the works,” Iger said in an interview with Good Morning America (via Deadline). “And there might be a Frozen 4 in the works, too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now.”
Still, Disney’s silence at D23 on Frozen 4 leaves some uncertainty. The studio could fold the ideas into a single film, or it could indeed move forward with a two-part narrative. What is certain is when the third film will finally debut.

“She did say Frozen III, or Frozen 3, would hit screens in 2027 (Disney has Nov.24, 2027, on hold for the animated movie–that’s the traditional Thanksgiving spot for Frozen),” wrote Deadline. That timeline pushes the release back from earlier expectations.
“During Disney’s Q1 2024 earnings call in February, CEO Bob Iger revealed that Frozen 3 was given a 2026 release window alongside Toy Story 5, the latter of which was later assigned a June 19, 2026 release date,” wrote IGN last year. “Considering that the first two Frozen films were released around Thanksgiving in November, chances are Frozen 3 will release on November 25, 2026.”
Now, November 2027 is the official date.

As the release shifts, so does production. Josh Gad, the voice behind Olaf, told Collider that the cast has yet to step into the recording booth.
“We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it’s going to be worth the wait. It’s pretty extraordinary what they’re doing. Pretty extraordinary,” Gad said. “For me, my whole thing was don’t do a sequel unless there’s a reason to do a sequel. If you have a story worth telling, then call us up and let’s do it. To Jennifer Lee’s credit, she really took that note and gave herself that note and has created something that’s going to be worth the wait.”
He also hinted at the possibility of more to come.

“I think the plan, what they’ve announced, is that there is a Frozen 3 and 4 in the works,” Gad added. “The story that I’ve been kind of previewed is the grandest story we’ve ever done, so I anticipate it’s going to be a little too much for one movie.”
Frozen’s presence extends well beyond film. The franchise has inspired merchandise lines, video games, podcasts, and large-scale theme park expansions. Guests can experience Frozen Ever After at Walt Disney World, Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey at Tokyo DisneySea, and the World of Frozen in Hong Kong. Broadway also embraced the story in 2018, adding new songs to an already beloved score.

Narratively, Frozen has reshaped how Disney approaches its heroines. Elsa and Anna’s arcs emphasize empowerment, growth, and family bonds. Elsa’s journey, in particular, has resonated deeply, with many fans interpreting her storyline as representing queer identity, sparking hopes that future films could make that connection explicit.
From a business standpoint, Frozen remains one of Disney’s most valuable franchises. While Inside Out 2 (2024) briefly overtook Frozen II as the top-grossing animated movie, Frozen’s cultural weight and commercial impact remain unmatched.
With Frozen III confirmed for 2027 and talk of a fourth film still swirling, the franchise is set to continue shaping Disney’s animated landscape for years to come.
