Despite Controversy, ‘Frozen’ Broadway Musical Takes the Top Spot on Disney+ Chart

Disney’s Broadway adaptation of Frozen: The Musical made its highly anticipated debut on Disney+ on June 20, 2025, quickly claiming the #1 spot on the streaming platform’s Top 10 chart. The live production, which initially premiered on Broadway in 2018 after a series of previews in Denver in 2017, has now reached millions of viewers from the comfort of their homes, surpassing even the much-discussed 2025 remake of Snow White in the process.

Another Loss for ‘Snow White’

The release of Frozen: The Musical is another notable moment in the ongoing drama surrounding the Snow White remake, which, despite its curiosity-driven streaming numbers, couldn’t hold onto the top spot. While the 2025 Snow White remake generated plenty of buzz due to its behind-the-scenes controversies, it seems Frozen’s loyal fan base and its engaging, family-friendly magic were more than enough to reclaim the #1 position on Disney+.

However, the Frozen musical has not been without controversy. In fact, many fans have questioned a scene in the show that comes off as sexual in nature. The backlash online has overshadowed the premier in some ways.

Developed shortly after the success of Disney’s 2013 animated Frozen, the stage adaptation of the beloved film had been in development since 2014. Disney was keen on creating a show that retained the heart of the original film while offering a fresh theatrical experience. The result was a massive success, earning its place as a Broadway staple since its 2018 debut.

A Broadway Favorite Joins Disney+

Following the Broadway success, Disney shifted its focus to bringing live performances to streaming platforms, with Frozen: The Musical now joining a growing list of professional recordings available to audiences worldwide. This release follows in the footsteps of Disney+’s successful streaming debuts of Hamilton in 2020 and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in 2023, both of which became streaming sensations. With Frozen, Disney continues to tap into the growing demand for high-quality, live-stage performances that can be accessed from anywhere.

It wasn’t a huge surprise that Frozen quickly claimed the top spot on Disney+ once it was released, thanks to its massive and loyal fan base. The musical, like the movie, appeals to audiences of all ages, making it a prime candidate for streaming success. The production values, as expected from Disney, ensure an immersive and high-quality experience for viewers at home.

For Disney, the release of Frozen: The Musical on Disney+ is part of a broader strategy to expand its entertainment empire through streaming. As Broadway classics are now making their way to Disney+ alongside movies and TV series, the company is redefining how audiences consume iconic live performances. The musical’s successful streaming debut signals the continued success of Frozen and solidifies Disney’s approach to its streaming strategy.
