The Disney Store is officially winding down operations in one region, marking a shift that many international shoppers didn’t expect.
For years, the Disney Store has served as a bridge between fans and the wider Disney ecosystem. Guests who couldn’t easily reach Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, or international destinations like Tokyo Disney Resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland often relied on online platforms to stay connected. The convenience softened the distance, especially as physical Disney Store locations steadily disappeared.

The strategy has changed. Disney’s recent emphasis on theme park growth — from expansions at Hong Kong Disneyland to major developments underway at Disney World and Shanghai Disneyland — hasn’t extended equally to global retail. As a result, many fans now depend on the digital storefront more than ever.
Big Announcement Impacts Disney Store
According to Topick.hket, the official Disney Store shopping website in Hong Kong will close on December 29. The announcement arrived with little fanfare, but it immediately caught the attention of Disney collectors and Hong Kong Disneyland regulars who have relied on the platform for merchandise access.
Customers can continue placing orders until the shutdown, and Disney says all purchases made before the deadline will still be delivered as planned. This brief transition window offers one last chance for shoppers to stock up before the online store disappears.

Once the site shuts down, visitors will be redirected to Buyee, a third-party service acting as a purchasing proxy for Disney Store Japan. The arrangement introduces a more complicated buying process, replacing Disney’s own infrastructure with an outside intermediary.
Buyee will handle payment, delivery, and customer support. Even so, proxy fees and international shipping charges will drive up the cost of securing official merchandise. Fans say the enhanced price tag dramatically changes what used to be a straightforward experience.
The Disney Store Japan website remains primarily in Japanese, though pop-up instructions in English and Traditional Chinese help guide overseas shoppers. Despite this, the region’s membership benefit program does not apply to proxy-assisted purchases, leaving frequent buyers without the usual perks.

Many fans have expressed disappointment, particularly because only “selected merchandise” will be available through Buyee. The limited range cuts into the breadth of products Hong Kong shoppers once enjoyed. Collectors note that the restricted assortment feels like a step backward.
What This Means for Hong Kong Disneyland Fans
The closure lands at a significant moment for Hong Kong Disneyland, which has spent the past several years revitalizing its offerings. World of Frozen opened to major fanfare, expanding the park’s footprint and drawing international tourism interest. The Castle of Magical Dreams — a complete reinterpretation of Sleeping Beauty Castle — has become the resort’s centerpiece.
Hong Kong Disneyland has also invested in new entertainment, seasonal events, and the Stark Expo area of Tomorrowland, which continues to support Marvel-themed experiences and will soon add a brand-new Spider-Man attraction similar to the Tower of Terror.
The resort only recently returned to profitability after years of pandemic-related shutdowns and tourism disruptions.

For many local residents, the official Hong Kong Disney Store website offered a convenient companion to the park itself. It gave shoppers access to park-adjacent merchandise without requiring a visit, especially useful during months when capacity restrictions or closures limited access.
Without that outlet, fans now face higher costs and a narrower selection. Some are urging Disney to establish a new physical store in Hong Kong, similar to how Dubai and Abu Dhabi have received fresh Disney Store locations ahead of Disneyland Abu Dhabi’s development. Others hope for a future partnership that might restore direct online sales.

In the meantime, Hong Kong Disneyland remains the most reliable source of in-region Disney merchandise. The park’s lines have been refreshed to support its major expansions, and exclusive items connected to the likes of World of Frozen and Duffy and Friends continue to draw collectors from across Asia.
