On Monday, Walt Disney World Resort’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad officially debuted its fresh new look. The revamped attraction doesn’t reopen until next spring, but fans of the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness can now get a peek at the refreshed roller coaster as they await its return.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Closure and Refurbishment Timeline
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad first closed on January 6, 2025, for a major refurbishment, which included extensive work on the ride’s track and vehicles. Guests watched new steel roller coaster tracks being delivered to Magic Kingdom Park on flatbeds, with a crane used to lower the new pieces into place. Throughout the spring and summer, construction crews worked diligently to retrack the roller coaster while the ride vehicles were refreshed. By October, November, and December, Disney Park guests reported seeing the refreshed vehicles in action, with some even spotting Imagineers on site performing test runs.

Last week, Walt Disney World Resort confirmed that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would officially reopen in the spring of 2026, featuring “new magic” and an updated Rainbow Caverns opening scene.
Latest Update: Major Milestones in Frontierland
According to WDWNT, construction crews recently reached a major milestone in the refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The scaffolding that had surrounded much of the attraction’s exterior was removed, signaling the completion of a significant portion of the work. While construction walls still conceal parts of the ride, the temporary structures were cleared, giving Disney Park guests a clearer view of the updated attraction.

While work continues on the ride, including testing of the new steel tracks and updated ride vehicles, Disney has not yet started using test dummies, which typically signals that final testing is about to begin. These preparations are crucial to ensure the ride is safe for Magic Kingdom Park guests when it opens in 2026.
Frontierland: A Hub of Construction
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s refurbishment is just one part of the ongoing transformation in Frontierland. In July 2025, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat closed to prepare for a massive redesign that will bring Piston Peak National Park to the area. Inspired by the Cars (2006) movie franchise, Piston Peak will feature two new attractions, along with themed landscapes and elements drawn from America’s national parks.

Additionally, plans are already underway for a Disney Villains land, which will further expand Magic Kingdom Park “beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” While few details have been revealed about the Disney Villains land, it is expected to feature new attractions, entertainment, dining, and merchandise experiences.

Due to these extensive renovations, the Walt Disney World Railroad is currently operating in shuttle mode, running between Fantasyland and Main Street, U.S.A. The Frontierland station is closed during this construction period.
