Former MLB All-Star Criticizes Disney Cruise Line Over Cross-Dressing Performers

Former Major League Baseball star Ender Inciarte is best remembered for Gold Gloves, outfield wall robberies, and speed on the basepaths. Yet over the weekend, the retired All-Star stepped into the cultural spotlight for a very different reason, sparking debate after criticizing part of his experience on Disney Cruise Line.

The former Atlanta Braves outfielder publicly shared frustration over “men dressed as women” during a recent Disney cruise, prompting a wave of online discussions over gender expression, children’s entertainment, and what qualifies as family-appropriate on Disney ships.

In a series of posts, Inciarte explained that the situation didn’t sit well with him during a vacation with his family, insisting his comments were rooted in moral conviction rather than hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community. When challenged, he responded directly, defending himself from accusations of hate and reiterating that his concern was tied to what his child saw while onboard.

“It wasn’t hatred or a personal attack. It was an opinion based on my convictions. I believe in respecting everyone, but also in calling things by their name without mockery or contempt. Living in peace doesn’t mean silencing one’s conscience,” he wrote to one critic.

To another user questioning his motives, he replied: “Then where is my hate? All i am saying is having my kid enter a place where a 6ft tall guy is dressed as a woman and acting like one would traumatize my kid on a family cruise. I don’t think it’s hate i just don’t want to normalize that behavior.”

Inciarte later tagged Disney Cruise Line directly, making his core complaint public rather than private. While he praised the cruise experience overall, he didn’t hold back about the specific part he disliked:

“Hey @DisneyCruise.. love your cruises! Except for the part that there are man dressed as woman,” he wrote. “Thought you already got over it.”

The athlete did not specify which performance or activity featured the entertainer he referenced. Disney Cruise Line is known for Broadway-style productions, themed lounges, deck shows, and character activities with programming that spans from fully family-centric to adults-only late-night venues. Many guests online pointed out that inclusive casting, cabaret-style performers, and gender-expressive entertainment are not new within the cruise industry or within Disney entertainment history.

Still, Inciarte’s remarks struck a nerve, landing at the intersection of family expectations, representation, and the evolving landscape of live entertainment. The comments quickly circulated, drawing both support and criticism. Some parents echoed his sentiment, saying they would prefer clearer labeling or separation of certain entertainment types on family cruises. Others strongly disagreed, saying that LGBTQ+ and gender-expressive performers are longstanding parts of theater culture, not something inappropriate for families.

Supporters of Disney’s inclusive entertainment philosophy argued that diverse performers have existed in mainstream media for decades—from the flamboyant comedy of Mrs. Doubtfire to Ursula’s drag-coded influence—while critics framed the conversation as one about parental choice.

The issue also raised questions beyond one man’s post:

Should cruise lines provide clearer activity labeling for guests?
Should family-friendly vacation environments shield children from certain performances?
Or should inclusion mean families encounter performers of many identities?

As the conversation grew, Inciarte continued to defend himself, rejecting claims of bigotry and asserting that moral discomfort does not equal hate speech. The discussion showed no signs of slowing as users debated cultural norms, respect, and freedom of opinion.

Discourse Once Again Arises

At this time, Disney Cruise Line has not issued any statement responding to Inciarte or the discourse surrounding his post. The cruise line’s entertainment model continues to feature a variety of performers, venues, and themed nights, many of which are designed with both inclusivity and family enjoyment in mind.

Inciarte, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner and former MLB All-Star, has largely stayed out of public controversy since stepping away from baseball—but his comments demonstrate how quickly personal reactions can ignite national conversation in the era of rapid-fire social media.

For now, nothing suggests a policy change is coming. Disney’s entertainment offerings remain as-is, programming continues, and thousands of families sail each week without issue. But Inciarte’s post, amplified by his public platform, taps into a cultural conversation that is far bigger than one cruise ship: how modern family entertainment navigates identity, inclusivity, and comfort levels among diverse guests.

Whether viewed as valid parental concern or as harmful rhetoric toward gender-expressive performers depends largely on the reader. But one thing is clear—this topic will continue to surface as entertainment and social values evolve, especially within massive brands like Disney that sit at the center of childhood culture.
