New ‘Batman’ Project Has Been Canceled

Batman has been a fixture of popular culture for over 80 years, appearing in comics, animated TV shows, films, novels, and every other area of entertainment you can think of.

The character continues to evolve on multiple fronts, too, including upcoming theatrical projects like The Batman: Part II (2027), which will see Robert Pattinson respond to the Bat-signal once again, and The Brave and the Bold, the DCU reboot based on the comic book storyline of the same name.

Video games have also long been a key avenue for exploring Batman’s rich universe.

The Arkham series, starting with Arkham Asylum and continuing through Arkham City and Arkham Knight, has earned widespread acclaim for its narrative depth and gameplay mechanics. Most recently, Batman: Arkham Shadow debuted exclusively for the Meta Quest 3, offering fans an immersive VR experience within the Arkham universe.

However, a planned sequel to Arkham Shadow has been canceled.

According to Aftermath, Meta’s closure of multiple VR studios and layoffs in its Reality Labs division were major factors.

Sanzaru Games, which was reportedly working on the follow-up, was affected by these cuts. Despite Arkham Shadow‘s positive reviews, the next entry will not move forward.

There is still a bright spot for fans of interactive Batman gaming experiences, though. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is scheduled for release on May 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a later release on Nintendo Switch 2.

Watch the official trailer below:

The official description reads:

“Become the Dark Knight in an open-world LEGO action adventure from TT Games, the award-winning studio behind LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga™. Battle Gotham City’s most notorious Super-Villains and relive the journey of Batman™ from origin to legend – packed with iconic moments and signature LEGO humor.”

Players will have the chance to explore Bruce Wayne’s story from his origins to his rise as the Dark Knight, facing both allies and villains from Batman’s long history.

While the Arkham sequel is no longer expected to happen, the LEGO game will give players another way to step into Gotham City and engage with the Dark Knight’s legacy.
