Walt Disney World Resort conducted a secret test on Tuesday, allowing solo riders to bypass the standard queue at Space Mountain by using the Lightning Lane entrance without purchasing Lightning Lane passes. The experiment operated differently from typical single-rider operations, but still offered significantly reduced wait times to guests willing to ride alone.
Lightning Lane Access Without Payment

Walt Disney World Resort tested a potential single-rider system for Space Mountain on Tuesday morning for only a few hours, BlogMickey reported. The trial differs substantially from previous single-rider tests at the Magic Kingdom Park attraction.
Typically, Disney cast members walk through the first portion of the standby line, asking if anyone is riding solo, pulling those guests aside to fill empty seats. This “unofficial” system saves minimal time since solo riders still wait through most of the queue.

Tuesday's test granted solo riders access to the Lightning Lane entrance—typically reserved for guests who paid for Lightning Lane passes. There was no signage advertising the option, but Disney cast members at the Space Mountain entrance informed guests that a single-rider line was available.
Solo travelers or parties willing to split were directed to the Lightning Lane entrance, where cast members confirmed that the group was comfortable splitting up. Single riders then entered the Lightning Lane queue with instructions to identify themselves as single riders to the next cast member they encountered.
System Prevents Abuse

At the merge point between Lightning Lane and standby queues, single riders again identified themselves to cast members. They were then sent to a separate queue in Space Mountain's Omega side-loading area.
The system prevents guests from sneaking into Lightning Lane without authorization—paid Lightning Lane users must scan MagicBands, park tickets, or smart devices at the merge point. Single riders bypass this scan but are clearly identified and separated into a different queue.
During the test, the Omega side served Lightning Lane guests exclusively while the Alpha side handled standby queue guests. Single riders were allowed to fill empty Lightning Lane vehicle seats only.
No Permanent Plans Announced

Walt Disney World Resort hasn't confirmed plans to continue testing or implement a permanent Space Mountain single-rider line. An official version could congest the Lightning Lane queue, potentially requiring reconfiguration of the attraction queue before permanent implementation. Whether future tests are scheduled remains unknown.
Limited Single-Rider Options at Disney World
If Space Mountain gains a permanent single-rider line, it would join a small group of Central Florida Disney Park attractions offering the option: Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Test Track and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT, and Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Several attractions were built with single-rider infrastructure, but haven't permanently implemented it. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney's Hollywood Studios occasionally opens single-rider access, though it's not standard. Avatar Flight of Passage at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park features a single-rider queue by design, but it has never been activated.
