Star Wars Outlaws arrived in 2024 with big expectations. Ubisoft’s open-world adventure promised sprawling planets, dynamic stealth and combat, and a whole new perspective on the galaxy’s criminal underworld through outlaw Kay Vess and her companion Nix.
Set between the original trilogy's The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), the highly anticipated game aimed to give players freedom to explore multiple worlds while navigating criminal factions and high-stakes heists. Watch the trailer below:
Outlaws Wasn't the Success It Could Have Been
But while Outlaws did indeed introduce expansive environments and new characters, the response from fans proved very mixed. The game drew criticism for technical issues, clunky mechanics, and concerns about its scale compared to other open-world titles.
Ubisoft later confirmed the game failed to meet sales expectations, placing the future of the Outlaws series in doubt. Whether a sequel will ever happen remains unclear.

Lucasfilm Continues To Expand the Story
But despite the game’s reception, Lucasfilm’s publishing arm is keeping the Outlaws story alive in another format. The tie-in novel Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon, written by Mike Chen, expands the world introduced in the game while shifting the spotlight to supporting characters ND-5 and Jaylen Vrax.
According to Penguin Random House’s description, the novel follows the pair as they “embark on their descent into the galaxy’s underworld in search of answers and opportunity.”
Instead of revisiting Kay Vess’ storyline, the book explores how other figures operate within the same criminal landscape, offering a broader look at the world in the game.

An Star Wars Outlaws Video Game Sequel Is Unlikely
Since launch, Outlaws has received expansions through downloadable content, including Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune, both of which introduced additional characters and storylines. Low Red Moon continues that expansion, but through traditional publishing rather than gameplay. So while the initial game wasn't the success Ubisoft and Lucasfilm hoped it would be, it seems there's still plenty of life in it yet.
Whether the Outlaws storyline continues beyond tie-in media is uncertain. Ubisoft hasn't announced a sequel, and the game’s performance leaves its future open to speculation. However, Star Wars storytelling has historically extended beyond single projects through novels, comics, and additional television shows that fill out narrative gaps.
Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon was published on February 3 and is available now.
