After 54 Years, Disney World Guests Can No Longer See the Haunted Mansion

After five decades at the Magic Kingdom, the Haunted Mansion is no longer visible to guests walking through Liberty Square.

The transformation happened in stages. Back in December 2025, Walt Disney World Resort began clearing the Haunted Mansion's graveyard and lawn, pulling out the themed tombstones and landscaping and replacing them with construction walls and markers. In the early weeks of 2026, scaffolding went up around the facade, followed by a printed scrim featuring a photo-realistic image of the attraction's exterior. Even that version left the building's two towers and weathervane visible above the printed wrap.

Now, a new dark green scrim has been installed around both towers, concealing nearly the entire structure from guest view. Only the weathervane still pokes out from the top. WDWNT shared a photo of the current state of the attraction on Facebook, capturing just how completely the 54-year-old building has been obscured.

Whether the dark green scrim is temporary — eventually to be replaced by a printed version like the one below — hasn't been confirmed.

Why the Work Is Happening

Walt Disney World Resort previously filed construction permits hinting at plans to extend the Haunted Mansion's facade to mask backstage buildings once the nearby Piston Peak National Park area opens. The character and aesthetic of the Liberty Square attraction aren't expected to change meaningfully; this appears to be structural and cosmetic work tied to the broader transformation of that corner of Magic Kingdom Park rather than a reimagining of the ride itself.

Announced at D23 Expo 2024, Piston Peak National Park is a Cars (2006)-inspired mini-land coming to Frontierland, built around sweeping national park landscapes and featuring two new attractions: a rally race ride and a family-friendly experience. The area is currently under construction on the former site of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, both of which closed last summer to make way for the project.

  1. ARE YOU KIDDING? Disney World looks like a downtown construction site. All beloved attractions are being MURDERED by money hungry execs or crybaby so call social groups. The dream that Walt envisioned is gone or nearly gone. It really isn.t Disney anymore. After 60+ years of going to or watching Walt Disney is gone. The memories destroyed.

  2. While it may not end up looking EXACTLY like the Haunted Mansion we all know and love, if it helps hide all of the stuff that will lessen the theming and take guests out of that illusion, then I’m in favor of it. AS LONG as they don’t ruin the Haunted Mansion in the process.
