End of an Era for Magic Kingdom as Disney World Confirms Tomorrowland Refresh

Magic Kingdom Park's Tomorrowland emerged transformed this week as Walt Disney World Resort completed a three-year rock repainting project and installed new misting palm trees, fundamentally altering the land's appearance. The improvements arrive as Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin undergoes final testing before its April 8 reopening, following its August 2025 closure.

WDWNT documented the completion of rock work at Tomorrowland's main entrance on Wednesday. Disney cast members have finally finished the project that started in 2023, mysteriously stopped, and then resumed in February 2026.

The rocks were originally brown before Disney painted them shimmering blue-gray in 2016. Years of sun damage prompted a 2023 repainting that abruptly stopped without explanation. For nearly three years, freshly painted rocks starkly contrasted with faded, weathered sections. The original brown color remained visible at the base near the Cinderella Castle moat waterline.

Work resumed in February 2026. The finished rocks appear naturally faded, likely minimizing future water damage visibility. The moat is currently drained as crews repaint Cinderella Castle with an updated gray-and-blue color scheme.

Then, on March 26, Chip and Company reported that misting palm trees reappeared throughout Tomorrowland, posting this photo on X (formerly Twitter):

New Misting Palm Trees Arrive in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom

Similar electric palm trees once stood at the Tomorrowland entrance before vanishing years ago. At least six now occupy multiple spots: the Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe path, near Tomorrowland Speedway, and the walkway connecting Star Traders, Space Mountain, and TRON Lightcycle / Run.

The silver-and-green structures continuously spray cool mist for guests crossing the asphalt during hot Central Florida days.

Walt Disney World Resort hasn't publicly confirmed the completion of the rock project or the installation of the palm trees, nor has it confirmed whether additional work is planned.
