After 3 Years, Disney World Makes a Massive Shift in Tomorrowland

Walt Disney World Resort is radically changing Tomorrowland's color scheme, painting entrance rocks blue-black instead of the light blue-gray originally planned when work began at Magic Kingdom Park nearly three years ago.

WDWNT reported on February 23 that crews working in the drained Cinderella Castle moat are applying the darker color to rocks at Tomorrowland's entrance—a sudden departure from the 2016 blue-gray scheme the 2023 project was meant to restore.

Abandoned Project Finally Resumes

Disney Fanatic reported on February 11 that Walt Disney World Resort had resumed the rock repainting after a two-and-a-half-year pause. Disney cast members began the work in 2023 before inexplicably stopping, leaving partially painted rocks to fade further under the Central Florida sun.

The incomplete work became increasingly apparent as months, then years, passed. Disney restarted without a public announcement this month, taking advantage of the drained moat needed for Cinderella Castle's own color restoration.

Chaotic Mix of Colors

Rolling planters block the walkway near rocks on the Cinderella Castle side of the bridge into Tomorrowland, where most work is concentrated. The opposite side near Tomorrowland Terrace displays three different color schemes: light blue-gray from the 2023 attempt, very faded gray predating that project, and newly exposed natural brown where the drained moat reveals unpainted sections. The new blue-black color makes for a fundamental shift in Tomorrowland's visual identity at its primary entrance near the Cinderella Castle hub.

Walt Disney World Resort has not explained the color change or provided a completion timeline. The project's three-year odyssey from start to abandonment to restart with a completely different color scheme exemplifies an inconsistent maintenance approach that has left Magic Kingdom Park with years of visible deterioration and unfinished work.
